Weekend junior lacrosse roundup: Strong efforts from A’s and B’s
The St. Catharines WMKL Athletics won two of three games over a hectic weekend to improve to 5-3 in Ontario Junior Lacrosse League action.
The Athletics began the first of three in three nights with a 9-8 win at Brampton.
Colton Armitage paced St. Catharines with three goals while Tye Steenhuis, Keaton Zavitz and Jackson Webster added two goals each.
Oliver Vanyo faced 42 shots in goal for the A’s.
St. Catharines then edged Kitchener-Waterloo 11-10 in overtime in a rare Saturday night home game at Canada Games Park.
The game was tied 10-10 following regulation.
Zavitz paved the way with three goals, including the winning goal in OT to go along with two assists, while Christian LeFeuvre added two goals and five assists and Zackary Toll two goals and two assists. Steenhuis, Armitage, Noah Synder and Noah Simpson added singles.
Vanyo faced 44 shots and earned the win.
The A’s then ran out of gas Sunday in Orangeville where they dropped a 12-4 decision to the Orangemen.
St. Catharines fell behind 5-0 before Toll got the A’s on the board at the 13:16 mark of the second period.
Synder, Zavitz and Webster also scored.
Ty Wilson faced 59 shots in goal for the A’s.
The A’s host the 6-0 Northmen Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Junior B’s remain hot
The Junior B Athletics continue to pile up the victories with a 17-6 triumph at Welland and a 10-7 win over the Guelph Regals Saturday night at home.
Trent Mooradian had three goals and three assists and Jaden Patterson a goal and seven assists versus Guelph.
Cody McNeil, Jack Parker, Drew Kenney, Ian Kohut, Landon Jeckles and Lucas Briscall also scored.
Mike Napoli made 39 saves in goal for the win.
Against Welland, Parker led the offence with five goals while McNeil added four and Mooradian and Kenney three each. Patterson collected a goal and eight assists while Lochlan Belliveau also scored.
Jarred Brant earned the win in goal with 24 saves.
The A’s are now 12-2 and just four points behind Six Nations and Elora, who are tied for first place with 24 points each.
The A’s are at Hamilton Thursday, home to Six Nations Saturday at 8 p.m. and London Sunday at 8 p.m.
