Spears swept by Junior Mustangs
The Niagara Spears junior varsity football dropped a 39-8 decision to the London Junior Mustangs last weekend.
With the loss, Niagara fell to 2-4 in Ontario Summer Football League action.
“London is a really good team and they came out and they were very physical with us and we didn’t respond as well as we should have,” Spears head coach Brad Martin said. “They moved the ball effectively and more importantly their defence played very well.”
Scoring for Niagara were: Kieran McDonald on a 15-yard TD pass from Austin MacRae; and, a two-point convert on a pass from MacRae to Micheal Bielich.
The JV Spears are at Burlington on Canada Day before hosting the Hamilton Junior Ti-Cats July 8 at 4 p.m. at Kiwanis Field.
HAMILTON 49 BANTAM SPEARS 0
The bantam Spears fell to 1-4 in OSFL action following a 49-0 road loss to the London Junior Mustangs
“Overall we could not get any momentum going offensively or defensively throughout the entire game. Offensively we wanted to control the line of scrimmage by committing to the run to help slow down the high powered junior Mustangs’ offence,” Niagara head coach Austin Huh said. “But at the end of the day, the Mustangs’ offence and defence was too much for our undermanned team.”
The Spears offence generated 97 yards of total offence, 83 by way of passing and 14 yards of rushing. Defensively: Owen Saunders registered three solo tackles and a tackle for a loss, an interception and a pass breakup; Hudson Grant registered one solo tackle and four assisted tackles; Gabe Diaz registered three solo tackles and two assisted tackles; and, Will Taylor registered three solo tackles an assisted tackle, a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble.
“The entire Spears team competed hard for four quarters and gave it their best,” Huh said.
The bantams are at Burlington on Canada Day before hosting the Hamilton Junior Ti-Cats July 8 at 11 a.m. at Kiwanis Field.
