The Niagara IceDogs added some much needed depth and experience to their blueline with the acquisition of Daniil Sobolev from the Windsor Spitfires in exchange for three draft picks.
The IceDogs are sending their 15th-round pick in 2025 as well as a conditional fourth-round pick (Flint) in 2025 and a conditional eighth-round pick in 2025.
Sobolev, a 2003-born defenceman from St. Petersburg, Russia, was drafted 40th overall by the Spitfires in the 2020 CHL Import Draft. Sobolev played two seasons for the Spitfires amassing 138 games played and would suit up in 24 of Windsor’s 25 playoff games during their run to the OHL Championship in 2022.
“We are thrilled to welcome Daniil to the IceDogs family,” interim IceDogs general manager Wes Consort said. “Daniil is a physical D-man who is engaged in all three zones, with his style of play it will help our overall team defence this year and provides stability on our back end.”
Sobolev was selected by the Montreal Canadians in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Over his two seasons he has tallied 26 points in 110 regular season games.
The IceDogs will host the Peterborough Petes on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Meridian Centre to kick off the pre-season schedule. The schedule also features two games being played at community rinks. On Sept. 9 the IceDogs and Guelph Storm will travel to Beamsville for a game at Fleming Memorial Arena. This game will be considered a home game for the IceDogs. Finally, the IceDogs will wrap-up their pre-season campaign on the road, on Saturday. Sept. 23, as they travel to Millbrook to take on the Peterborough Petes at Millbrook Arena.
