Sept. 25 Niagara College Report: soccer, golf
The Niagara College women’s soccer team (1-1-1) played to a 2-2 tie versus the Sheridan Bruins in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action.
The Knights broke through in the 25th minute as Aneisha Gobbels launched a free kick towards the back-post with perfect precision to put the Knights up 1-0. Eight minutes later Gobbels set up captain Mia DiPasquale to score her second header off a corner in as many games.
Going into the second half the Knights continued to play a solid defensive game not allowing the Bruins any quality looks. The Knights offensive pressure registered 11 shot attempts but came up empty.
In the 76th minute the Bruins scored on a free kick by Jessica Jagdeo before she tied the game at 2-2 in the 84th minute on another free kick.
“It was a disappointing tie. We controlled play, out-chanced and out-passed Sheridan tonight. Allowing two goals on free kicks is tough,” Knights coach Rob Lalama said.
The Knights visit the St. Clair Saints (2-0) Saturday and the Lambton Lions (0-4) Sunday.
MEN’S SOCCER
The men’s soccer team fell to 0-3 with a 1-0 loss versus the Bruins.
The Bruins were on an all out attack through most of the game registering 21 shot attempts and struck early in the 17th minute to take a 1-0 lead. After the early goal, the Knights defensive line stood strong and was able to handle the Bruins consistent offensive pressure. Niagara goalkeeper Sean Darracott made six of his 10 saves during the first half to keep his side only down one going into halftime.
Knights coach Frank DeChellis was pleased with the effort.
“That was the best game we’ve played this season. We completed 397 passes which is our season high,” he said. “I was very proud of our back four defenders tonight and the guys who stepped in for them and our goalkeeper was out of this world. He saved another PK for us, he gave us a lifeline.”
Knights visit the St. Clair Saints (2-0) Saturday and the Lambton Lions (0-4) Sunday.
GOLF
The Knights competed at the Georgian Invitational at Heritage Hills Golf Club, finishing 11th in team competition.
The top individual performances were from Tristano Mancuso (77) and Aiden Mcvey (79).
