Falcons top Hamilton, Sailors move into first
The St. Catharines Falcons shook off a tough start to top the Hamilton Kilty B’s 6-2 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Sports Complex.
“Us coaches are proud of the way the team showed up tonight. Rough start by giving up a goal in the first minute, but thought the boys got stuck in right afterwards and controlled the game from that point,” Falcons coach/general manager Tyler Bielby said.
The Falcons quickly turned things around, netting five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes. The teams then exchanged goals in the third.
Treyson Dewar and Calvin Petrovsky each had two goals for St. Catharines while Mitch Dmytrow and Owen Simpson also scored. Captain Caleb Thompson chipped in with three assists.
“Dewar with a couple big goals, in big moments, was a difference maker tonight,” Bielby said. “Came to the aid of our captain as well. We tip our cap to his game tonight.”
Bielby also singled out AP Luca Santostefano.
“Was great to see Luca get his first junior game in. He did a great job helping us secure the win.”
Hayden Jeffery made 24 saves in net for the win.
Anthony Giancola and Austen Pomerleau replied for Hamilton.
Sailors 3 Junior Canadians 0
Tucker Adams made 21 saves for the shutout as the Port Colborne Sailors blanked the Welland Junior Canadians 3-0 at the Vale Centre.
The win improves Port’s record to 6-1-2 and moves them into first place.
“In our first nine last year we were 1-8,” Sailors general manager/coach Scott Barnes said. “It’s a pretty big difference. We talked about that before the game how a start can put you into a deep hole or into a good spot.”
Barnes chalked up the strong start to experience.
“We have a lot of returning guys who know the systems and being a year older put us in a good spot,” he said. “We have a really good offence and also gotten some really good goaltending lately and our special team have been near the top of the league since the beginning. Those elements are a recipe for success.”
Following a scoreless first period, Christian Williams got Port on the board early in the second period before P.J. Alexander and Aiden Cupelli followed with goals.
