NRHSAA football roundup: Myer, Simcoe, GFESS still unbeaten
The Governor Simcoe Redcoats (3-0) remained unbeaten in Niagara Region High School Athletic Association Tier 2 senior football action with a 43-6 victory over the St. Catharines Collegiate Saints.
“The team played well today in all facets of the game. We took a few undisciplined penalties but in general executed well on both sides of the ball,” Simcoe head coach Jamie Brophy said. “I am most proud that all players got in the game and contributed to the victory. We saw some great plays by new players which bodes well for the rest of the season. It was a total team victory.”
Contributing to the win for Simcoe were: Marshall Sumbler with a 10-yard TD reception from Noah Budgell; Budgell with an 80-yard TD run; Carter Small had a 70-yard TD reception from Budgell and a 10-yard rushing major; Ethan Gowland had a 20-yard TD run; Sawyer Cotton had a six-yard TD run; and, Callum Moore had a strip and a fumble recovery.
For Collegiate: Aerate Rehemutula had 14 carries for 58 yards; Colton Joyce had four carries for 17 yards and TD; Nolan Petten had an interception; and, Collin McMillan, Aaron Goertzen and Barry Neuman did the gritty stuff that Collegiate needs more of.
“I am proud of their quiet leadership. I am happy that we moved the ball versus the best defence in Division 2. We are gaining valuable experience each week. The miscues are less frequent but costly,” Collegiate head coach Nathan Greene said. “Tackling is better at times but needs to be consistent for the entire length of the game. Players that were initially seen as depth players are getting valuable experience and are forcing their way into the starting lineup.”
The Saints didn’t have any players that played two ways the entire game.
“This commitment to player development will pay dividends as the season progresses and for years to come.”
MARAUDERS 42 COUGARS 3
The defending NRHSAA Tier 1 champion A.N. Myer Marauders’ record sits at 3-0 following a 42-3 victory over the Centennial Cougars (1-2).
Leading the way for Myer were: Evan Goforth with three TDs; Travis Boland, Aaron Falconer and Mitch Casuccci with single majors; Thomas Somerville with three passing TDs; and, Noah Walters with a passing major.
“The D line caused havoc for most the game and our special teams continue to play well,” Myer head coach Dave Buchanan said. “Overall, the team is working through the process of each week and trying not to look too far ahead. They have worked hard to have success and they have a lot of potential if we stay healthy.”
Performing well for Centennial were: Mason Saxton and Brody Marton on defence at linebacker with support from Presley Kalybaba and Mahkai McPhee; Kolton Anger with an interception; Ethan Krick, Kyle Buchanan and Owen Major on the defensive line; Jesse Wagar and Brad McHoul at safety and linebacker; Nick Jokic who threw for 121 yards and rushed for 21; Dylan Dellamonache with 89 total yards from scrimmage; and, Adam Dawson with 29 receiving yards on top of being a key player on the D-Line.
“The defence played strong considering we were going up against a tough team in Myer and I think the game was closer than the score dictated. They’re a well-coached team and they run a strong offence and they have talent all over the field,” Centennial head coach Brad Barter said. “They gave our front five a test all game long. There’s some tough and strong players on the Myer line. Considering we had several stalled drives in their end and some miscues with drops and a poorly-timed bad snap that put us in a bit of a hole early, we definitely didn’t quit and I’m proud of what every one of those players did out there today. To hold them to the score we did and the fact we had some success moving the football against them, that’s a positive we can build on going in to next week.”
FLYERS 28 HORNETS 0
Eden evened its NRHSAA Tier 2 record at 1-1 with a 28-0 shutout of the Stamford Hornets (1-1)
Contributing to the win for the Flyers were: Ben Enns who tossed 30- and 25-yard TD passes to Wes Wiens; Isaac Leader with a rushing major; Kieran Necakov-Walker picked up a fumble and ran it in for a score; and, Harrison Krause, Shaw Kelly, Jackson Denny, Charles Krzeczkowski who played well on defence.
“We have a great core group of kids who are coming out to practice and working hard and that work ethic is definitely spreading,” Eden head coach Bob Krzeczkowski said. “Stamford played hard right to the end. That’s class”
GRYPHONS 19 WOLFPACK 14
The Greater Fort Erie Gryphons improved to 3-0 in NRHSAA Tier 1 action with a 19-14 victory over the West Niagara Wolfpack (0-3).
“It was a tough, hard-earned win for us. We fought through a tough team and the team has bought in with what we are doing and what we are,” GFESS head coach Dave Sauer said. “We had a complete game from our offence, defence and special teams and limited our mistakes. We won the turnover battle, which for us is huge, and we controlled the clock. Full team effort and off to next week.”
Leading the way for the Gryphons were: Brayden Stoddard with a 10-yard TD run; Chad Phillips with a 45-yard TD pass from Colin Laroche; Laroche with a one-yard TD run; and, interceptions by Xander Boake and Bo Train.
West Niagara scored its majors on TD passes from Xavier Zatylny to Azem-Simmons (30 yards) and O’Quinn (20 yards.
“Their ball control run game ate tons of clock. Them recovering three on-side kick offs was a crusher,” Wolfpack head coach Zach Silverthorne said.
BULLDOGS 24 SPARTANS 14
With a 24-14 victory over the Westlane Spartans (0-3), the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs improved to 2-1 in NRHSAA Tier 1 play.
“It was a close one for most of the game. I thought our defence played pretty well tonight but we had too many penalties that almost cost us the win,” Churchill offensive coordinator Donnie Marshall said. “We are getting better each week but still lots to work on on both sides of the ball.”
Ty Kostyniuk and Evan Trochta scored offensive TDs for the Bulldogs and a pick 6 was recorded by Khamal Reid. Ethan Valesquez booted a 33-yard field goal.
For Westlane: Owen Lemoine had 13 solo tackles; Jacob Ranger had nine tackles and 106 yards rushing; Cam Parlee had a touchdown pass to Gavin Bailey; and, Logan Kapitanchuck had a touchdown pass to Anshu Patel.
