Local athletes shine at provincial cross country meets
Niagara athletes brought home four individual medals and two team medals from the Athletics Ontario cross country championships held Nov. 12 at Downsview Park in Toronto.
Individual medalists included: Thorold Elite Track Club’s Jack Burdon who won gold in the under-8 boys 1000 metres; Thorold Elite’s Deagen Hallett who won silver in the under-14 boys 2000 metres; Edge Triathlon’s Graham Tomori who won silver in the under-18 boys 6000 metres; and, Thorold Elite’s Simon Marull who won bronze in the under-8 boys 1000 metres.
Placing fifth were: Runners’ Edge Sophia Cino in the under-18 girls 6000 metres; Thorold Elite’s Aszlyn Weaver in the under-12 girls 2000 metres; and, Thorold Elite’s Lily Lavery in the under-10 girls 1000 metres.
Winning team gold in the under-14 boys division were Thorold Elite’s Hallett, Levi De Andrade Sampaio, Jacob Millen, Brock Piekny, Dante Pietrangelo, Justin Martens, Alex Chuchman and Max Hancock.
Capturing team bronze in the under-12 girls category were Thorold Elite’s Weaver, Jessica Brown, Zoe McAuley, Hilary Doyle, Marin Brooks and Violet Burkholder.
MTA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Niagara’s 17 and under runners had a strong showing at the Minor Track Association championships held Oct. 28 at Centennial Park in Etobicoke.
Gold medals were won by: Jack Burdon of Thorold Elite in the mite boys 1000 metres; Madison Eaton of Thorold Elite in the intermediate Girls 4000 metres; and, T.J. Woods of Thorold Elite in the intermediate boys 4000 metres.
Thorold Elite’s Adele Kushner mined silver in the intermediate girls 4000 metres.
Racing to bronze medals were: Jessica Brown of Thorold Elite in the tyke girls 1500 metres; Layla Gallant of Thorold Elite in the intermediate Girls 4000 metres; and, Evan Blake of Thorold Elite in the intermediate boys 4000 metres
Rocco Shuker of Thorold Elite placed fourth in the intermediate boys 4000 metres.
Finishing fifth were: Isaac Marull of Thorold Elite in the peewee boys 800 metres; Alexandre Craig of Thorold Elite in the mite boys 1000 metres; and, Aszlyn Weaver of Thorold Elite in the tyke girls 1500 metres.
Thorold Elite teams brought home three gold medals including: Jack Burdon, Alexandre Craig, Benjamin Morgan, Simon Marull and Franklin Burkholder in mite boys; Madison Eaton, Adele Kushner, Layla Gallant and Kate Taylor in intermediate girls; and, T.J. Woods, Evan Blake, Rocco Shuker and Chase Larsen in intermediate boys.
Earning silver in the tyke girls division was the Thorold Elite team made up of Jessica Brown, Aszlyn Weaver, Lily Lavery, Violet Burkholder, Pearl Barnett Adams and Marin Brooks.
