Weekend junior B roundup: Corvairs top Falcons; Meteors set franchise record for wins
The St. Catharines Falcons came up flat in Caledonia Monday night, dropping a 6-1 decision to the Corvairs in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
“The better team definitely won as far as effort goes,” St. Catharines general manager/coach Tyler Bielby said. “We were in quicksand and we didn’t have it. Right from the puck drop until the final buzzer we were struggling to put some solid shifts together.”
The Falcons scored the lone goal of the first period when Dallys Hibbert netted his sixth of the season. The Corvairs responded with four goals in the second, two from Markus Dempewolf and one each from Nathan Duplessis and Clark Dunford.
“Caledonia came to play. We hung in there and it was a good game, the first half the game it was 1-1, and the rest is history,” Bielby said.
Dempewolf completed the hat trick in the third while Zachary Naherne also scored.
It was a chippy affair with the Falcons being assessed 95 minutes in penalties and the Corvairs 93.
“I think it’s two big rivals that have a lot of history playing each other and emotions are always high. As the game started to get away, I think both teams got a little out of hand,” Bielby said.
Things spilled over in the stands as well behind the Falcons bench with an overzealous fan.
“I think it just speaks to the rivalry again. There’s a lot of passion between both fan bases and last night we were in enemy territory and we definitely felt that from their base, but at the end of the day, that’s as old as sport and it’s all part of it,” Bielby said.
The Falcons are home to Port Colborne Friday and in Welland Sunday.
“We want to win every hockey game but there’s a reason we have to play because there’s only one winner and the team on the wrong side has to find a way to regroup and reset and that’s how we get better,” Bielby said.
