Niagara Juel splits pair: Juel Prep 2-1
The Niagara Juel girls basketball team split a pair of games last weekend, defeating the Durham City Chameleons 72-58 and falling 70-34 to the Ottawa Capitals.
Niagara trailed Durham 15-14 after one quarter but rallied to lead 30-22 at the half and 52-43 after three quarters.
Top performers against the Chameleons were: Alyah Pereira (Westdale) with 16 points; Reese Bolibruck with 15 points; Keira Teske (Governor Simcoe) with seven points; Amelia Siolkowsky (E.L. Crossley) with six points and seven rebounds; and, Jessica Sager (St. John Henry Newman) with six points and five boards.
“We had a so-so game. We are working on some new concepts and it really showed. We had a great second quarter and fourth quarter,” Niagara head coach Si Khounviseth said.
Ottawa built quarter leads of 17-14, 33-21 and 47-25 to defeat Niagara.
Leading the way for Niagara again the Capitals were: Bolibruck with eight points; Alena Tepsic (Saltfleet) with six points; Lauren Smith (St. Jean de Brébeuf) with four points; Emma Vendittelli (A.N. Myer) with three points and eight rebounds; and, Pereira with three points.
“Very inconsistent second game. We were OK for most of the game and had a really disappointing finish. We are creating chances and opportunities but not able to capitalize on them: Easy layups; missed putbacks; and, not making wide-open looks,” Khounviseth said. “Then we did not defend well in the fourth quarter. We will continue to work and grow as players and as a team. We are making strides but the results have not been there.”
