April 10 local sports: Juel/Juel Prep hoops; EFN fundraiser; Mohawk winners
A group of Niagara Juel and Juel Prep players went 5-1 at a Basketball Stars of America tournament in Pittsburgh recently.
The squad went 3-1 in pool play and then went 2-0 to win the Iron Division.
“Great weekend for the team as we had no practices together and they came together quickly. It was an awesome weekend for learning for both the players and coaches,” Niagara Juel head coach Si Khounviseth said.
At the event, Niagara: won 42-40 versus WPA Bruins, a Grade 10 squad; defeated Best Virginia 42-12, a Grade 11 team; dumped Best Virginia 37-17, a Grade 10 squad; lost 54-41 to the WPA Bruins, a Grade 11 team; won 41-18 versus Best Virginia (Grade 11s); and, defeated Best Virginia (Grade 10s) 34-27.
Members of the team were: Juel players Shorleigh Burrows, Emma Venditelli, Brianna Davis, Grace MacDonald and Amelia Siolkowsky; and, Juel Prep athletes Jaylen Stienstra, Maude Law, Talia Hultink and Ava Briggs.
EFN FUNDRAISER
We Were Young Once is coordinating a fundraiser July 13 to support the Education Foundation of Niagara (EFN).
It wants to ensure the children of Welland have all the support they need to reach any dream they can imagine.
The party will start at 7 p.m. at The Core Pub on the Niagara College campus in Welland. Tickets are $20 and there will be food, raffles, a silent auction and dancing.

The group is also looking for raffle prizes and silent auction items.
GRIMSBY ATHLETES HONOURED
Two Grimsby athletes won major awards at the recent Mohawk College Mountaineers athletic banquet.
Duncan McDonald was co-winner of the male athlete of the year award and Paige Epp was named the winner of the Dr. Sam Mitminger Award, the highest honour a Mohawk athlete can win.
McDonald shared his award with his teammates on the men’s curling team that won gold at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championships and silver at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championships. It was the program’s third consecutive OCAA championship and CCAA silver medal.
Epp, a former NCAA Division I athlete, rekindled her love for soccer again when she joined Mohawk soccer for the 2022 season. In her first season, Epp was an OCAA West Division Second-Team All-Star. During her two seasons. Mohawk went 11-2-7. She also previously earned OCAA All-Academic and CCAA Academic All-Canadian honours.
