Poirier still a Bulldog
Easton Poirier was starting to wonder if his dream of being selected in the Ontario Hockey League draft was going to come true.
The 15-year-old, Grade 10 student at Sir Winston Churchill watched the OHL draft on line over the weekend with his family and was beginning to prepare for the worst when he finally heard his name called in the 13th round (256th overall) by the Brantford Bulldogs.
“I was nervous but thank god I got picked. It was unbelievable,” he said. “I was in shock. Me and my family were just really excited and my phone was going off.”
Poirier collected 11 goals and 31 points for the Niagara North Stars this season while battling a pair of serious injuries to his collarbone and knee which sidelined him for a good portion of the season.
“I’ve been working for this forever and it was finally a dream come true when I was drafted,” he said.
Following his selection, Poirier received calls from the Bulldogs coaching staff and a scout from the club.
The next step in his journey is to hit the ice with the other Bulldogs draft choices.
“Development camp is in a few weeks and moving forward keep they will keep me posted and see what happens,” he said.
Poirier will be joined at camp by fellow North Stars prospects Patrick Babin and Maksim Corovic.
The son of former St. Catharines Falcons enforcer Steve Poirier isn’t quite sure how next season will play out.
“It’s really hard to tell. Probably stay at home, maybe junior B hopefully. I’ll try my best to make the team but if I don’t then something at home,” he said.
Easton Poirier feels it is vital to go with the flow wherever hockey takes him.
“You just have to keep your head up and just believe in yourself and try your best obviously and see what happens. Don’t get down on yourself,” he said.
He plans to hit the gym this summer and stay on the ice as much as possible to prepare for training camp.
