Nolan Bosetti discovered the hard way the turf isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence.
The 23-year-old Welland native moved from the St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves to Hamilton last season, but is happy to be back with Roma this year.
“Roma is known throughout the league to have that great environment and very supportive by the coaches,” Bosetti said. “We had a good reunion of guys coming back so every practice is always great. Every game you feel always supported by the coaches and the players and the atmosphere that Roma provides is nothing like anything else.
“That was always the talk at the beginning with the coaches, that you’ll miss it when you leave. It’s a great opportunity to be back playing with the guys again.”
Roma Technical Director of Soccer Davide Massafra was happy to welcome Bosetti back into the Wolves’ fold.
“Having Nolan back with us is a great feeling. He played for our club in the past and it’s wonderful to see him wearing the Wolves jersey,” Massafra said. “When he approached us in January I found him very mature and determined to earn his spot back with hard work and commitment.”
Bosetti made an immediate impact with the Wolves, scoring a goal as Roma kicked off their season over the weekend with a 3-2 win over North Mississauga in a League1 Cup game.
“It was a really good feeling,” Bosetti said. “We have a good group of guys so winning as a team of course was a big accomplishment for us in the first game. “We fought hard for it. It wasn’t an easy walk-through game. And especially as a Cup game, it was a big moment for us to progress in a big tournament.”
Bosetti, who recently completed his final semester of kinesiology studies at Brock and is now working toward being a firefighter in his hometown, is happy to play the role of mentor this season.
“The experience I bring is one of the roles that makes me a big part of the team,” the Notre Dame graduate said. “Being an older guy on the team it’s a leadership role and trying to play my part in a system planned out my the coaches. With everyone playing our parts we get our results.”
Bosetti, who normally lines up at centre back, has high hopes for the Wolves this season.
“We definitely want to fight for the title in the Championship Division,” he said. “We have a good group of guys, lots of talent. As you can see from the last game, a very gritty group who are willing to fight to the end. I definitely think we have a chance to go very far in this. Whether it be the Cup or the league, I think we’re fighting for it all.”
Wolves head coach Federico Turriziani was thrilled to get off to a good start.
“It was an important goal of the season for us to move forward in the League Cup,” he said. “Vaughan will be a very strong opponent but that’s another story we will think about in a few weeks.”
Mike Fernandez and Luca Raganin also scored for the Wolves.
The Wolves managed the win despite a depleted lineup.
“The game was a gamble with many players out with injuries and schools commitments. (Coach) Federico was very good in creating a lineup that remained motivated for 90 minutes. After a slow start, we slowly took over and we deserved the win with a lot of opportunities in the second half.
“Our defensive line looks very solid with Nolan and Luca Ragagnin there. Once Nathan Toltl is back from injury, coach Federico will be able to rotate them properly and allow our squad to be very competitive against each opponent.”
The Wolves travel to Mississauga Friday for a regular season game.
“I feel that North Mississauga will adjust a lot for this Friday’s upcoming game, so it won’t be easy, but the boys will be ready,” Massafra said. “We are still implementing the 2024 roster. We just signed another 2004 offensive player from Hamilton and we are also looking to bring in a winger from outside the province.”
The Wolves open at home Friday, May 10 at 8:45 p.m. versus Master FA.
