Juel Prep sixth in league
The Niagara Juel Prep girls basketball team won two of three games last weekend to improve to 12-9 in league play.
Niagara sits in sixth place in the provincial league after defeating the St. Lawrence Lightning 57-52 and the York North Avengers 65-49 while losing 63-51 to Halton.
Against St. Lawrence, Niagara led 18-14 after one quarter, trailed 33-32 at the half and went into the fourth quarter leading 45-43.
“It was a strong game for our girls. Multiple lead changes but a steady game. We out-rebounded them and played a strong defensive game,” Niagara head coach Chris Moscato said.
Top performers for Niagara were: Maude Law (E. L. Crossley) with 14 points and six boards; Camilla Moscato (Notre Dame) with 13 points and eight rebounds; Kate Kolbinson (Port Colborne) with 10 points and seven rebounds; Ava Briggs (Notre Dame) with seven points; and, Talia Hultink (Smithvillle Christian) with six points and seven rebounds.
Versus York North, Niagara built quarter leads of 18-17, 31-25 and 49-39.
“The girls were consistent and kept the lead the whole game. Sinking our outside shots helped us do just that,” he said.
Leading the way for Niagara were: Camilla Moscato with 25 points and nine rebounds; Kolbinson with seven points and 10 rebounds; Hultink with six points and 10 rebounds; and, Lyla Rodrigue (Centennial), Jaylen Stienstra (Blessed Trinity) and Briggs with six points.
Against Halton, Niagara faced quarter deficits of 18-13, 41-30 and 52-37.
“Halton is a tough team,” Chris Moscato said. “The girls fought hard to narrow the score. Although we out-rebounded them, we fell a little short.”
Topping the stat sheet for Niagara were: Stienstra with 14 points; Law with 10 points and six rebounds; Moscato with nine points and 10 rebounds; Addi Torigian (Sir Winston Churchill) with six points and five rebounds; and, Maria DiFlavio (Blessed Trinity) with five points.
