Juel Prep finishes strong
The Niagara Juel Prep girls basketball team will be heading into the league championship weekend on a roll.
This past weekend, the team won all three of its games to finish the regular season with a record of 15-9.
“We had a great final weekend going 3-0. In our first game, the girls were able to battle back from a 20-point deficit through amazing effort and a never-give-up attitude,” Niagara head coach Chris Moscato said. “The final two games, the girls played as a team and everyone was able to contribute to the victories. The team is starting to hit its stride as we head into the final tournament.”
Niagara defeated the Ottawa Capitals 61-60, the GTA Blues 75-52 and the Durham City Chameleons 85-56.
Against Ottawa, Niagara faced quarter deficits of 27-7 and 38-30 before tying the game heading into the final quarter.
Top performers for Niagara against Ottawa were: Maude Law (E.L. Crossley) with 14 points and seven rebounds; Lyla Rodrique (Centennial) and Talia Hultink (Smithville Christian) with 11 points; Camilla Moscato (Notre Dame) with nine points and nine rebounds; and, Ava Briggs (Notre Dame) with five points and seven rebounds.
Against the GTA Blues, Niagara built quarter leads of 19-13, 32-28 and 50-41.
Playing well for Niagara were: Law, 15 points and five rebounds; Moscato with 12 points and five rebounds; Addie Torigian (Sir Winston Churchill) with 12 points; Avery Whaling (Blessed Trinity) with seven points; Rodrique with six points and eight steals; Hultink with six points and seven boards; and, Teagan Fraser (Blessed Trinity) with five points.
In the victory over Durham City, Niagara built quarter advantages of 18-6, 44-22 and 66-39.
Leading the way for Niagara were: Whaling with 15 points and 13 rebounds; Moscato with 12 points and six boards; Fraser with 12 points; Jaylen Steinstra (Blessed Trinity) with 10 points and five boards; Law with 10 points; Maria DiFlavio (Blessed Trinity) with eight points and five rebounds; Rodrique with seven points; and, Briggs with six points.
The league tournament will also be held May 24-26 in Niagara.
