Top BPSN seeds triumph Tuesday
After opening their season with a 33-26 loss to E.L. Crossley, the A.N. Myer senior girls basketball team entered the BPSN Girls Basketball Tournament riding a two-game winning streak.
“The team has been playing pretty well this season,” Myer coach Dave Shaw said. “They are a talented group of players and have fun playing together. We keep working at playing to our standards at all times.”
Myer opened the BPSN tournament at Sir Winston Churchill Tuesday with a 58-17 victory over the Saint Paul Patriots.
“The team played well today. They moved the ball well and worked to generate great shots for each other. Everyone contributed something in this win today,” Shaw said.
Scoring for the Marauders were: Maia Walker 14; Sophia Kotsanis 8; Emma Vendittelli 7; Madelyn Ker 7; Ava Walker 6; Elizabeth Cook 5; Mariska Colcuc 5; Vianna Visscher 4; and, A. Allan 2.
“Today’s game was tough. Myer definitely has a lot of talent and we worked hard to do the things we know how to do and do them well,” Saint Paul coach Kristin McDonald said. “We left the game knowing we improved as a team and we are looking forward to our next game.”
Sam Dino paced Saint Paul with nine points. Also scoring for the Patriots were: Meredith Marrie 4; Marigold Hunt 2; and, Nora Marrie 2.
The Patriots entered the tournament with a 2-2 record in Niagara Catholic Athletic Association action.
“Entering the tournament, we have a few games under our belt and we understand where our strengths and weaknesses are,” McDonald said. “We knew the competition would be tough. We have a great group of players who are excited to play and eager to learn and get better.”
FIGHTING IRISH 50 LYNX 13
Lila DiPietro netted 13 points to spark the top-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 50-13 victory over Saint-Jean-de-Brébeuf Lynx Tuesday at Governor Simcoe in opening-round play at the BPSN tournament.
Also scoring for the Irish were: Kyra Digaetano 10; Ava Briggs 8; Lauryn Briggs 6; Elyse Carmichael 6; Ava DeChellis 4; Camilla Moscato 2; and, Tino Muzah 1.
Genevieve Fry led the Lynx with six points. Also scoring for the Lynx were: Kylie Duthie 4; Kaylee Lambert 2; and, Emilie Misner 1.
STORM 34 GOLDEN EAGLES 21
Claire Bylsma scored 16 points Tuesday to lead the Smithville Christian Storm to a 34-21 victory over the Thorold Golden Eagles in opening-round action of the BPSN tournament at Sir Winston Churchill.
Evo Fluit and Talia Hultink added nine points each for the winners.
Leading the way for the Thorold Golden Eagles was Kaydence Hales with 13 points. Also scoring for Thorold were Charlee Rowland, Marissa Hall, Layla Gallant and Kyla Gallant with two points each.
THUNDER 53 REDS 28
The Blessed Trinity Thunder opened the BPSN Tournament Tuesday at Sir Winston Churchill with a 53-28 victory over the Denis Morris Reds.
Scoring for the Thunder were: Jaylen Steinstra 13; Lita Sutor 10; Avery Whaling 6; Alana Meester 5; Brooklyn Turner 4; Maria DiFlavio 3; Quinn Wilson 3; Danika Zarowny 3; Teagan Fraser 3; Carolyn Heatherton 2; Raf DiMarcantonio 1.
Replying for the Reds were: Sofia Sestili 16; Jamie Kamendy 6; Hailey Davidson 3; Tessa Pingue 2; and, Isabella Molek 1.
