OFSAA roundup: basketball and volleyball
The 10th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior girls basketball team made it to the quarter-finals of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA tournament in Brampton last week before dropping a 63-40 decision to fifth-ranked St. Thomas More.
Led by Grade 12 players Nicole Dixon, Abbey Grande and Olivia Bitman, the Irish opened the tournament with a 47-41 upset of fourth-seeded Assumption and followed it up with a 53-28 triumph over 13th-seeded South Carleton.
“It was a strong team performance throughout the tournament which included the roster of Lila DiPietro, Camilla Moscato, Tino Muzah, Elise Carmichael, Ava Briggs, Lauren Briggs, Ava Dechellis and Kyra DiGaetano,” Notre Dame coach Loris Lucchetta said.
Against Assumption, the Irish built quarter leads of 20-11, 35-25 and 39-34. Moscato led Notre Dame in scoring with 16 points. Also scoring were DiPietro (13). Dechellis (7). Ava Briggs (4), Dixon (4) and Lauren Briggs (2).
In the win versus South Carleton, the Irish roared out to a 24-3 lead after one quarter. They led 31-13 at the half and 44-21 going into the final quarter. Scoring for Notre Dame versus South Carleton were Moscato (18), DiPietro (14), Ava Briggs (8), Dixon (7), Dechellis (2), DiGaetano (2) and Grande (2).
Notre Dame opened strong versus St. Thomas More, building a 16-14 lead after one quarter but fell behind 33-24 at the half and 47-32 going into the final quarter. No scorers were available from the game.
BOYS AAA VOLLEYBALL
The Eden Flyers won the consolation championship at the OFSAA AAA boys volleyball championship in Kingston with a 3-1 win (20-25, 26-24, 25-18 and 26-24 over A.B. Lucas.
The Flyers advanced to the consolation final with a 3-2 victory (26-28, 25-22, 29-27, 18-25 and 15-13) over Holy Cross and a 3-1 triumph (25-14, 25-12, 18-25 and 26-24) over John Ross.
Eden went 2-2 in pool play defeating Franco-Cite 2-1 (13-25, 25-21 and 15-13) and Chippewa 2-1 (22-25, 25-18 and 15-6) and losing 2-1 (21-25, 25-23 and 13-15) to A.B. Lucas and 2-0 (22-25 and 22-25) to Hodan.
