Wolfpack blank Flyers
The West Niagara Wolfpack completed an undefeated season locally with a convincing 6-0 win over the Eden Flyers in the Niagara Regional High School Athletic Association Zone 4 AAA girls hockey final Wednesday.
“It was really good seeing the girls come together as a team,” West Niagara coach Cassi Barton said. “We had an undefeated regular season but we did see some tough competition throughout the regular season but also we did two tournaments this year.”
The Wolfpack, who topped Eden 2-1 in the first game of the season, came out flying with a pair of quick goals.
“I was definitely proud of them in yesterday’s game to take the zone championship,” Barton said. “We really came out strong. That first period kind of set the tone early and then Eden’s goalie, she had an outstanding game. Definitely made us work for those chances.”
Briar Smith had two goals for the Wolfpack while Trinity Clark, Emily Brooks, Megan Clark and Rebekah Woodland also scored.
Madelynn Herkes played the first two periods in goal while Katie Cairns finished up in the third to share the shutout.
The Flyers now advance to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA) playdowns Tuesday, March 4 in Hamilton. Blessed Trinity and A.N. Myer have also qualified.
The Wolfpack feature a strong roster filled with club players that captured the SOSSA title last season.
“I feel like we played our best game all season against a school in Mississauga (Lorne Park) in a tournament with amazing players,” she said. “So just for them to bring that same level of intensity to SOSSA hopefully and of course it would be nice to extend the season and make it further.
“I guess I’m just proud of the girls. It’s my first year, so just seeing them progress has been good.”
Also helping out behind the bench for the Flyers is outside coach Andrew Clark.
Members of the team are: Madelyn Herkes, Katie Cairns, Madison Frian, Amaya Goodfellow, Trinity Clark, Megan Clark, Rebekah Woodland, Madi Walker, Madelyn Hunter, Charlie Gibson, Macy Parker, Sam Kossek, Abby St. Croix, Jenna Prest, Emily Brooks, Briar Smith.
