The Hamilton Kilty B’s rebounded from a lopsided loss in Game 1 to defeat the St. Catharines Rankin Construction Falcons 3-1 Saturday night at the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena.
The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League best-of-seven, quarter-final playoff series is now tied 1-1 after the Falcons prevailed 8-2 in the opener Friday night in St. Catharines.
“Credit to the opponent for a hard-working night,” Falcons president of hockey operations/head coach Tyler Bielby said. “Tonight was a perfect reminder what playoffs are all about. Every inch has to be earned, and you have to get to the dirty areas to score goals in the playoffs. We spent a lot of time in their zone, but you have to work to get to the house and bury our chances. We missed the net far too much tonight and that was the difference.”
Hamilton goaltender Avery Alves earned the win, kicking out 40 shots.
Falcons netminder Hayden Jeffery was also busy facing 38 shots.
The Kilty B’s got on the board early when Kyle Ferguson scored just five minutes into the game.
St. Catharines netted their only goal and tied the game 4:44 into the second when Dallys Hubbert scored but the Kilty B’s quickly responded with a goal four minutes later by Lucas Kisil to regain the lead.
The Falcons fired 18 shots at Alves in the third but Hamilton recorded the lone goal when Spencer Jon Gendall scored in to at empty net at 18:28.
The Falcons power play had an off night, going scoreless in six opportunities with the man advantage.
The Falcons will take Sunday off before getting back to work Monday in preparation for Game 3 Tuesday in St. Catharines. Game 4 is Thursday in Hamilton and Game 5 Friday in St. Catharines.
