Amores named All-Canadian
Niagara Falls native Jordi Amores has been named a 2018 Canadian College Athletic Association Men’s Soccer All-Canadian.
He becomes first Niagara soccer player, and 15th Knight ever, to earn the prestigious accolade. Amores was presented with the honour at the CCAA awards banquet in Charlottetown, PEI, on Tuesday night as part of the 2018 CCAA Men’s Soccer Championships.
The fifth-year, Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School graduate has been an integral part of the Niagara Knights soccer program his entire career. The diminutive midfielder has the ability to control the game on both sides of the ball. His spectacular footwork consistently evades defenders, creating countless opportunities for his forwards. A tireless worker on the defensive side of the ball, he consistently disrupted the opposition’s attack through the midfield.
“We are extremely proud of Jordi being named a CCAA All-Canadian, a first for any soccer player at Niagara College,” Niagara’s associate director of athletics and recreation, Michele O’Keefe, said. “Jordi exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete with his success both on and off the field.”
A calming presence on the field and team captain, Amores’ hard-working demeanour earned the respect of his coaches and peers alike across the entire OCAA. This season, Amores leadership led the Knights to their most successful regular season, with the team earning seven victories in finishing second overall in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Division.
“As a coaching staff, we are very proud of Jordi being recognized as an All-Canadian,” Knights head coach Frank DeChellis said. “Every player and coach we have encountered, both on our own team and our opponents, remembers and respects Jordi’s style and work ethic.”
Beyond his abilities on the field, Amores further established himself as a leader off the field this season.
“Jordi is a busy man juggling both his schooling and running his own business on top of playing soccer,” added DeChellis. “He took the responsibility of being named captain very seriously and moved himself into a mentorship position, where he was always encouraging teammates and employed constructive language in moments of frustration.”
No different from his leadership style, the captain was eager to credit those around him for their contribution to his success.
“Being the first soccer player at Niagara to win the All-Canadian award would not have been possible without my Knights family,” Amores said. “I would like to express my humble and sincere gratitude to all my soccer teammates and coaches for all the support and trust they provided day in and day out.”
Two weeks ago, Amores was also named an OCAA West Division all-star for the fourth time in his career. Amores concludes his five years with his name scattered throughout the Knights record books. He wraps up his career as Niagara’s all-time games played leader, all-time playoff goals leader, and fifth all-time leading scorer.
As he has done a countless number of times in his career, Amores wanted to leave one last message for those who will continue to wear the Knights jersey.
“Remember why you play. Play for yourself, play for your teammates and cherish every practice, every game, and every season. It will be over sooner than you realize.”
