Following are the winners from last Friday’s Welland’s sports awards banquet.
Welland Sports Council Trophy for female athlete of the year: Maddie Leblanc, stand up paddle board.
Earl Leonard Memorial Trophy for male athlete of the year: Steve Magistrale, powerlifting.
H. L. Cudney Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to sports: Michele O’Keefe, sport builder.
Gord Sykes Memorial Award: Cyril Warren, multi-sport grassroots coaching.
Doc Brauweiler Memorial Trophy: Anthony Gallaccio, outstanding sport volunteer (photography).
Aurel Gervais Memorial Trophy: Sharon Ker, outstanding sport executive (curling).
Gil Beaulieu Memorial Trophy: Doug Jones, outstanding coach (canoe).
MT Bellies Trophy (Female masters athlete): Lynda Lemon, running/triathlon.
Outstanding achievement boxing: Ivan Burgus, Paul Reid and Simon Romero.
Outstanding achievement pickle ball: Fred Farnham, Mim Gibbons, Liz Macdonald, Ron Larouche, Karl Eliason and Peggie Allewell.
Outstanding achievement 100-year family involvement in sport: Napper’s Boxing Club.

TIGERS OPEN SEASON
The Niagara Tigers AAU boys travel basketball teams opened play last weekend in the Nike Signature league.
The Grade 11 Tigers went 2-2, defeating the Mississauga Jayhawks (67-65) and London Gold Medal (72-66) . The Tigers were defeated 65-50 by the Mississauga Monarchs and 83-79 by Steel City of Hamilton. Cormac McMahon (Myer) and Jerwyn Tutanes (Saint Paul) led a well-balanced effort.
In Grade 10 action, the Tigers also split their four games. Led by Conner Landell and Sacade Kasamba of St. Francis, they defeated Halton 57-37 and IEM Spartans 73-41. They were defeated by Uplay Canada 90-78 and DC United 61-59.
The Grade 9 team went winless on the weekend losing 69-47 to Burlington, 72-59 to Team Natty 72-59 and a lopsided loss to CKATT Select.
NIAGARA JUEL UNBEATEN IN KINGSTON
The third-place Niagara JUEL girls basketball team pushed its record to 12-3 by going 3-0 last weekend in Kingston.
Leading the way for Niagara in a 75-70 victory over Hamilton Transway were: Kaley DeMont (Churchill), 21 points, four rebounds and two assists; Elle Cooney, 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals; and, Madison O’Brien (Blessed Trinity), eight points, five rebounds and four steals.
Topping the stats sheet for Niagara in a 70-57 triumph over Blessed Sacrament were: O’Brien, 13 points and four rebounds; Cooney 12 points, five rebounds and two steals; Tori Rigas-DiDomenico (Myer), nine points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals; and, DeMont, nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Performing well in a Niagara 68-50 victory over Ottawa Elite were: DeMont, 12 points, three rebounds and two steals; Cooney, 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals; Rigas-DiDomenico, 10 points and two rebounds; and, Ally Sentance (Churchill), eight points, five rebounds, three assists and six steals.
