Area July 2: Soccer; CEBL tickets on sale; A’s wind up regular season
The Empire Niagara U-13 boys are headed to the U.S. National Club Cup.
After a successful 14-0 league record, Empire Niagara competed in the final four playoffs of the Great Lakes Alliance. In the semifinal game they defeated the Ohio Futbol Club 3-1 and followed that up with a 6-0 win over Cleveland Croatia in the championship final to advance to the nationals in Denver July 19-23 against some of the top teams in the United States.
The team is made up of 11 players from the Niagara Region and five players from the Western New York area.
Several of the players are also a part of the Pre-Development Academy in Rochester, N.Y.
Members of the team are: Seanesy Lovrics, Griffin Dehm, Domenic Talarico, Alessandro Elia, Nick DiSanto, Jakub Fedak, Lucas Dobson, Kensin Lambert, Quinn Olcott, Reid Oates, Octavian Bumbanic, Hayden Panunto, Brandon Bernardi, Noah Morelli, Marco Panunto, Martin Kuci. The coaches are Mario Elia, Brian Panunto and Tom Bernardi.
CEBL TICKETS ON SALE
The Canadian Elite Basketball League’s inaugural championship weekend will be held in Saskatoon Aug. 22–25

The CEBL, province of Saskatchewan and the city of Saskatoon will host a league gala dinner and awards, three-day family friendly street festival, tailgate parties, concerts, and the top four CEBL teams (including the host team, Saskatchewan Rattlers) competing for a chance to be named the first CEBL champions. The semifinals and the finals will be played at the Sasktel Centre.
A’S HOST BARRIE
The St. Catharines Athletics wind up the regular season versus the Barrie Lakeshores Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
The A’s, coming off a 7-1 win at Peterborough Friday, are 14-5 and tied with Burlington with 28 points atop the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A standings. The Chiefs own two games in hand.
The Lakeshores are 0-16.
