Area June 25: A’s clinch playoff spot; Golf shots
It was a good weekend for the St. Catharines Athletics.
The Athletics defeated Toronto Beaches 8-7 Sunday afternoon and in the process clinched a playoff spot and moved into a three-way tie atop the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A standings with 22 points.
The A’s, 11-5, have won eight of their last 10 games with four games remaining in the regular season.
St. Catharines led 3-2 after one period and trailed 7-6 after two. They rebounded to score the only two goals of the third.
Jeff Wittig paced the A’s with four goals while Carter Zavitz and Alex Simmons added two each.
Troy Holowchuk turned in a strong performance in goal for the A’s making 46 saves.
The A’s are home to Mimico, 8-5, Wednesday at 8 p.m.
