Area sport Oct. 26: Senior worlds wrestling results; Riverhawks split; Bowling scores
Diana Weicker, left, is shown preparing for the senior world championships. She ended up winning a bronze medal.
Brock Wrestling Club member Diana Weicker won a bronze medal in the 53-kilogram division at the senior world wrestling championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Earlier this year, Weicker won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Weicker defeated Zhuldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan 3-2 in the bout for bronze, giving Canada’s four medals, the most it has ever won at the senior worlds.
“Much like this whole year, my tournament had ups and downs. I am so proud of myself but also my teammates for bringing the heat through the whole tournament,” Weicker wrote on Facebook. “We all performed, but there’s still room to grow. I didn’t think I would walk away from the world championships with a medal in hand itching to get back on the mat and fix the gaps.”
Brock teammate Olivia Di Bacco came within one victory of winning a silver medal in the 68-kilogram division. In just her second world championship appearance, Di Bacco made the bronze-medal match via the repechage. She lost a 7-4 decision to finish fifth.
“I need to have more of a go get it attitude, I think,” Di Bacco told the Wrestling Canada website. “I’m settling or not fully committing in some situations where I need to drive through.”
Brock’s Jess Brouillette won her first 62-kilogram match before being eliminated while Jade Parsons (55 kilograms) and Jessie MacDonald (50 kilograms) both lost their opening matches.
RIVERHAWKS SPLIT
The Niagara Riverhawks split a pair of games this week, losing 10-2 in Glanbrook followed up by a 5-4 win at home versus Port Dover in Provincial Junior Hockey League action.
The Niagara RiverHawks travelled into hostile territory on Wednesday night and came out on the wrong end of a 10-2 drubbing at the hands of the first place Glanbrook Rangers.
Carter Leroux and Jacob Saddler scored in a losing cause.
Matt Boere was replaced by Dylan Matos midway through the third period in net for the Riverhawks.
The Riverhawks bounced back the following night with a 5-4 win over the visiting Port Dover Sailors at the Gale Centre.
Keith Palmer opened the scoring for the Riverhawks who led 1-0 after one.
The Sailors scored two quick goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead before the Riverhawks fired off three straight goals by Dante Massi, Leroux and Saddler to take a 4-2 lead after two periods.
The third period saw the Sailors fight back to tie the game before the period was five minutes old. Riverhawk captain Daniel Volpatti scored the winner at 9:42 of the third.
The Sailors outshot the Riverhawks 30-28 with Boere making 26 saves in the win.
The Riverhawks return to action next Thursday night when they host the Hespeler Shamrocks at the Gale Centre.
