Area sport: River Lions tickets on sale; Falcons move into second; Minor hockey roundup; Bowling results
Season tickets for the Niagara River Lions of the Canadian Elite Basketball League go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. at www.riverlions.ca/seat-map.
Season tickets are priced from $165 to $275 in the seating bowl and $450 to $850 for court side seats on the floor. Individual game tickets are expected to go on sale next spring.
The River Lions open their season Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m. against the Edmonton Stingers. Modelled after top international professional leagues, the CEBL is composed of teams in Hamilton, Edmonton, Guelph, Niagara (St. Catharines), Fraser Valley (Abbotsford), and Saskatchewan (Saskatoon).
Each team plays 10 home and 10 road games using FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules, and player and referee standards set by Canada Basketball. Rosters will be composed of at least 70 percent Canadian players, many playing professionally in North America and overseas during the traditional basketball season.
The 15-week schedule will see each team play each other twice at home and twice on the road. Four teams will advance to a championship weekend tournament at a location to be announced at a later date.

FALCONS MOVE INTO SECOND
The St. Catharines Falcons moved into second place with a 4-1 win over the Hamilton Kilty B’s Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference action.
The Falcons, 13-3-0-1, trail the league-leading Niagara Falls Canucks by six points with two games in hand.
St. Catharines, which last loss in regulation 4-2 Sept. 24 in Hamilton, have earned points in 13 straight games.
Carson Edwardson led the Falcons with a pair of goals while Kyle West and Andrew Somerville added singles.
The Falcons host the Kilty B’s Friday.
TIGERS TAKE TITLE
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers ran the table in Orillia capturing their third title for the 2008 age group in four seasons at the Jim Wilson Chevrolet Winter Classic.
The Tigers begun by shooting down the Erindale Spitfires 8-1 on Friday with Townes Bestward netting three and Brennen Hagar, Julian Belcastro, Tanner Cutler, Matteo Mete and Carson McComber adding singles.
Saturday saw the Tigers defeat the Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds twice by identical 3-1 scores. Mason Risto, Colby Franchetti and Hagar would score in the morning contest while Hagar, Franchetti and Mete would find the mesh during the afternoon quarter-final.
The Tigers defeated host Orillia 5-3 in the semifinals on Sunday with Tanner Culter picking up a pair and Franchetti, Belcastro and McComber rounding out the scoring.
Mason Risto and Hudson Kipp would score in Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Barrie Colts in the championship final.
Welland returned to Niagara District Major Atom A league play on Monday night at home and had their seven-game winning streak snapped by the larger Stoney Creek Warriors, who skated off with the 5-1 victory.
Franchetti scored the lone Welland goal while Deson Moriarity (2), Jacob Whitlock, Cayden Sheculski and Joseph Carvalho answered back for Stoney Creek.
Welland will look to regroup against the Pelham Panthers at 1:35 p.m. on Saturday in Pelham.
SAILORS SINK TIGERS
The Welland Mike Knapp Ford novice A Tigers advanced to the finals of the Jim Wilson Chevrolet Holiday Classic Hockey Tournament in Orillia on the weekend before being eliminated by the Port Stanley Sailors 5-2.
The Tigers opened the tournament with a 7-4 loss to Sailors. The Tigers then went on to beat the Orillia Terriers 10–0 and the Durham Warriors 6–0 in round-robin action. In their fourth game the Tigers met their Niagara District Hockey League rivals, the Grimsby Peach Kings, in what was essentially a semifinal game matchup.
Both Welland and Grimsby entered the fourth game with exact 2 – 1 win/loss records and the winner of this matchup would advance to the tournament finals. Welland beat the Peach Kings by a score of 5–2 and earned them a date in the finals against the Sailors.
Liam Seguin had two goals while Mackenzie Welychka and Dylan Wood scored in the opening game. Brady Matte took the loss in net.
Wood and Seguin each had two goals in the 10-0 win over Orillia. Ryan Rousseau, Sebastien Boucher, Jordan Hotham, Blake Hudak and Noah Rousseau added singles. Jackson MacLeod earned the shutout.
Welychka had two goals to lead the Tigers past the Warriors. Seguin, Noah Rousseau, Wood and Hotham added singles while Matte registered the shutout.
Seguin came up bit with the hat trick in the victory over the Peach Kings. Ethan Rousseau and Hudak also scored while MacLeod earned the win in goal.
In the final, Welychka and Seguin scored while Matte was in goal.
TIGERS EDGE KINGS
The Welland Youngs Insurance Tigers minor atoms scrambled to defeat the Grimsby Kings 2-1. After a barrage of missed opportunities, Austin Bovine finally found the net midway through the second scoring their initial goal. After another period and many attempts, Ethan Fortier then scored the wining goal late in the third, assisted by Lucas Homan and Kalen Sumbler.
The Tigers then dropped a 6-1 loss to the West Lincoln Wrath with very little effort put forward. Bovine scored with Sumbler earning the assist.
With their regular season record now at 5-4, the Tigers are hoping to regroup this week before heading in to Glanbrook on Tuesday night to battle the Rangers.
