Area sports Aug. 22: Pelham basketball; IceDogs training camp; JUEL and JUEL Prep tryouts; Niagara Riverhawks training camp
Registration for the Pelham Panthers basketball Association is now open at pelhambasketball.ca.
The association has already moved into the new Pelham Community Centre and is looking forward to an exciting new season.
Travel basketball tryouts start the week of Tuesday, Sept. 4 and a schedule will soon be posted on the website. House league sessions start Saturday, Oct. 13, under the leadership of Genille Kroeker from No Limit Performance. Questions about any of the programs can be sent to ppba.registrar@gmail.com.
Pelham basketball and No Limit Performance will be hosting a free training session this Saturday. The session for kids going into Grade 6 and under will run from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and for kids going into Grade 7 and above the session will run from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
All players are welcome to attend and members of the Pelham executive will be on hand to answer any questions about the association’s programs.
ICEDOGS TRAINING CAMP
Training camp for the Niagara IceDogs begins Tuesday at the Meridian Centre.
Camp will consist of player registration, intra-squad games and the annual Black and White game. With the exception of player registration, all events will be open to the public.
The IceDogs play their first exhibition game of the season Friday, Aug. 31 versus the Barrie Colts. The game will played at the Thorold Arena at 7 p.m. The IceDogs then take on the Kitchener Rangers Saturday, Sept. 15 at home.

NIAGARA JUEL/JUEL PREP TRYOUTS
Tryouts have been set for the Niagara JUEL and JUEL Prep teams.
It is the ninth year for Niagara to have a team in the JUEL league. Niagara has had many successes in the past nine years, including a silver medal in prep in 2017 and a gold in 2011. The JUEL team has been in the top half of the league for the past five seasons, including a fifth-place finish in 2018-19.
Frank Keltos is the head coach of the JUEL team for the second year and will be assisted by Kate Harpur and Joel Whitty. Taking over the JUEL prep team is Sue Sentance. Sentance was an assistant last season and earlier in her coaching career combined with Jennifer Caughill to lead a Niagara Rangers squad to a Division 1 OBA title.
No Limit Performance will also be helping out this season.
“Our goals continue to be focused on player development (skills and basketball IQ) and build young girls into confident, young women,” the coaching staffs wrote. “We are proud of the many girls who have left our program and are our now playing or have played in CIS , OCAA and NCAA.”

JUEL tryouts will be held at Brock on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob Davis gym, Sunday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Ian Beddis courts 3 and 4 and Wednesday, Aug. 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob Davis gym.
JUEL Prep tryouts will be staged Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob Davis gym, Sunday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Ian Beddis courts 3 and 4 and Wednesday, Aug. 29 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Bob Davis gym.
RIVERHAWKS TRAINING CAMP
The Niagara RiverHawks of the Provincial Junior Hockey League have announced their training camp dates and exhibition game schedule.
All training camp skates will be held at the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls.
Remaining dates include: Wednesday, Aug 22 from 8 to 10 p.m. and play in the Doug Burr Junior Tournament Friday to Sunday at the new Pelham Community Centre. Tourney games include: Woodstock, Friday at 5 p.m.; Lockport, Saturday at 9 a.m.; and, Brampton, Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Following a training camp Monday, Aug. 27 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., the team will play an exhibition game Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Dunnville on Aug. 31.
The camp also includes: training on Tuesday, Sept. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m.; a home game versus Dundas on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m.; training camp Thursday, Sept. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.; and, a home game versus Grimsby on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
The team’s home opener will be Wednesday, Sept 12 versus Dundas. Puck drop is 7:30 pm at the Gale Centre

NGBA JUEL AND JUEL PREP TRYOUTS
The Niagara Girls Basketball Academy has announced its tryouts for its new JUEL and JUEL Prep teams.
JUEL tryouts, for girls born in 2000 and 2001, will be held at the Bob Davis Gym Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m.
JUEL Prep tryouts, for girls born in 2003 and 2004, will be held Monday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bob Davis Gym and Thursday, Aug. 30 from 7:30 to 9:30 at Ridley College’s Griffiths Gym.
Cost to tryout is free.
Former Brock player Tara Poulin will coach the JUEL team. She is a four-time OFSAA champ as a coach at Jean Vanier and a two-time OBA Division 1 champ as an assistant coach.
The JUEL Prep coach is Carolyn Foreman. Foreman was an assistant coach at Brock for three years and a head coach at Mohawk for five years.
