Area sports June 28: IceDogs add two; Niagara Olympic Club; Beechwood golf
The Niagara IceDogs beefed up their blueline selecting 2002-born Swiss defender Giancarlo Chanton with the 46th overall pick in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. The 6-foot, 165-pound defenceman represented Switzerland at the U17 and U18 levels internationally. He was the captain at the U17 level.
Chanton played 17 games for the Langnau U17 SLC Young Tigers, collecting 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists). He moved up to the Langnau U20 program for 16 games, collecting nine assists.
“Giancarlo is an extremely complete defencemen, as a high-end left shot 02 defenceman, we address a need we had with our roster and have begun to really fill out our young roster,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. “This is a guy who has captained team Switzerland, was a top pair guy on their u18 this past season competing against guys like (Phil) Tomasino, and holding his own.
“He is a late birth 02 who is highly touted for his draft year and is a guy who I believe will grow and flourish with us for years to come.”
The IceDogs also acquired the rights to Christian Stevens from the Windsor Spitfires, in exchange for a conditional 15th-round selection in 2023.
Stevens, 17, was drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. The 5-foot-11, 181-pound winger played the 2018-19 season with the Whitby Fury of the Ontario Junior Hockey League where he collected 17 points. He is currently committed to the University of Massachusetts Amherst for the 2021-22 season.
