Area sports: River Lions honoured; Empire Niagara tryouts
Three members of the Niagara River Lions have been honoured by Canadian Elite Basketball League.
Forward Javin DeLaurier, who led the league with an average of 10.4 rebounds per game and finished second on the River Lions in scoring with 14.8 points, was selected a first-team all-star along with Jordan Baker, a forward with Edmonton, Xavier Moon, a guard with Edmonton, Nick Ward, a forward with the Ottawa BlackJacks, and Lindell Wigginton, a Hamilton Honey Badgers guard.
River Lions forward Tommy Scrubb was named to the all-Canadian team, which is new to the league. He averaged 17.7 points. 7.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists over seven games, helping Niagara finish second in the league with a 10-4 record and earn a bye to the quarterfinals.
Alex Campbell, a Fraser Valley Bandits guard, Shaquille Keith, also from Fraser Valley, Baker and Wigginton were the other homegrown players honoured by a league in which 70 per cent of roster spots must be filled by Canadians.
Niagara guard Lloyd Pandi won U Sports player of the year honours for the second time in as many years after averaging 7.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 14 games for the River Lions. The third-year student-athlete from Carleton University won his first award playing for Ottawa. Pandi ranked fifth on Niagara in field goal percentage, at 46.3 per cent, and second in three-point scoring percentage (42).
Soccer Tryouts
Empire Niagara will hold open tryouts for boys and girls U10-U18 beginning Tuesday, Sept. 14. Other dates are Thursday, Sept.16, Monday, Sept. 20 and Thursday, Sept. 23.
All tryouts will host at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
