Badgers winless in Ottawa
It was a winless weekend for the Brock Badgers women’s basketball team.
The Badgers dropped an 81-79 overtime decision to the defending champion Carleton Ravens Friday night and then fell 74-56 to Ottawa Saturday to fall to 2-3 in Ontario University Athletics regular season play.
“I thought we had a really good chance on Friday but we lost in overtime,” Brock head coach Mike Rao said. “Our kids worked really hard. I was impressed with the way that the kids played. I was proud of them.”
Brock showed it could go toe to toe with last year’s champions.
“If they play the way we did we can but everything has to go right too. The stars not only have to be there but things have to go our way,” he said. “They played with a lot of effort, a lot of pride and they hung in there.”
Against Carleton, the Badgers trailed 22-16 after one quarter and 38-35 at the half before building a 51-50 lead heading into the final quarter. The game was tied 71-71 after regulation play.
Leading the way for Brock were: Tito Akinnusi with 24 points and six rebounds; Angeline Campbell with 21 points; Madalyn Weinert with 19 points and six rebounds; and, Noor Bazzi with eight points. Both Akinnusi and Weinert were unavailable for the overtime.
Rao was happy to see Campbell’s breakout game.
“She played really well,” he said. “She made some shots.”
Top scorers for Carleton were Kali Pocrnic (25) and Jacqueline Urban (13).
On Saturday, Ottawa built quarter leads of 24-23, 44-37 and 57-39 to record the win.
Top performers for Brock were: Weinert with 16 points and six rebounds; Audrey Ntetani Umba with 10 points; Madison Macinnis with eight points; and Noor Bazzi and Olivia Fiorucci with five points apiece.
Ottawa’s leading scorers were: Natsuki Szczokin (17) and Emily Payne (14).
The Badgers host Queen’s (6-0) Friday at 6 p.m. and McMaster (5-1) Saturday at 6 p.m. Friday’s game will be played at the Bob Davis Gymnasium and Saturday’s game will be held at the Meridian Centre.
