Basketball roundup: OUA, OCAA and Niagara Juel
The Brock Badgers women’s basketball team pushed their Ontario University Athletics record to 10-0 Saturday with a 72-53 road victory over the McMaster Marauders.
Brock built quarter leads of 16-14, 37-25 and 52-32 to sweep a home-and-home series with McMaster.
Top performers for Brock were: Sam Keltos, 17 points and eight rebounds; Mackenzie Robinson, 16 points and seven rebounds; Ivana Twumasi, nine points and seven rebounds; Jenneke Pilling, seven points; and, Victoria Lawrence, eight points.
“I felt we played tremendous team defence causing McMaster to have 24 turnovers and we were able to shut down Sarah Gates, the OUA’s leading scorer,” said assistant coach Rick Lostracco. “Our bench provided much-needed rest and helped us extend our lead in the third and fourth quarters. Our senior players provided great leadership in the absence of our head coach, Mike Rao.”
Mac was led by Amy Stinson with 19 points. A.N. Myer product Tori Rigas-Didomenico had six points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
Brock hosts Waterloo Wednesday at 6 p.m.
MARAUDERS 75 BADGERS 70
The Brock Badgers men’s basketball team fell to 9-1 on the season following a 75-70 road loss at the hands of the McMaster Marauders Saturday.
The Marauders outscored Brock 20-13 in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Leading the way for Brock were: Tajinder Lall, 19 points and 10 boards; Daniel Caldwell, 18 points and 11 rebounds; Jordan Tchuente, 11 points and eight boards; and, William Boyer-Richard, 10 points and five rebounds.
Niagara Falls native Sefa Otchere led McMaster with 18 points and six rebounds.
Brock host Waterloo Wednesday at 8 p.m.
KNIGHTS 61 MOUNTAINEERS 42
The Niagara College Knights women’s basketball team (4-0) remained perfect in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play with a 61-42 road victory Sunday over the Mohawk Mountaineers.
Helping the Knights record the victory were: Janee Harrison (Sir Winston Churchill), 15 points and 10 rebounds; Jessica Bosma, 11 points and eight boards; Jamira Rousseau (Notre Dame), 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals; Terin Hultink (Smithville Christian), eight points and 13 rebounds; and, Lexxus Bell (Denis Morris), seven points, five steals and four rebounds.
Celina Chung topped Mohawk with 12 points.
KNIGHTS 88 MOUNTAINEERS 82
The Niagara College Knights men’s basketball team improved to 3-1 in OCAA play Sunday with a 88-82 road triumph over the Mohawk Mountaineers.
Powering Niagara to the win were: Delroy Grandison, 24 points and 13 boards; Kennan Larmond (Centennial/Ridley College), 19 points and eight rebounds; Reginald Williams, 15 points, five rebounds and six assists; and, Rahim Bardi (Governor Simcoe), 13 points and 10 rebounds.
NIAGARA JUEL 82 WOLVERINES 38
Yemi Oladipo (Sir Winston Churchill) scored 16 points to lead the Niagara Juel girls basketball team to a 82-38 victory over the GBCA Wolverines.
Other top performers for Niagara, which built quarter leads of 18-13, 39-21 and 60-33 were: Alexis Wright (Centennial), 14 points and six rebounds; Hannah Bourdon (Greater Fort Erie), 13 points and six rebounds; and, Brookelyn Keltos (Sir Winston Churchill), 11 points and seven rebounds.
NIAGARA JUEL 68 OTTAWA 41
Niagara Juel built quarter leads of 23-12, 38-23 and 57-30 en route to a 68-41 win over Ottawa Elite.
Preforming well for Niagara were: Oladipo, 15 points; Wright, 12 points and five steals; Sarah Hurley (E.L. Crossley), nine points; and, Bianca Sestili (Denis Morris), seven points.
NIAGARA JUEL 78 MONARCHS 75
Niagara Juel completed a perfect 3-0 opening weekend of action with a hard-fought 78-75 victory over the Mississauga Monarchs.
Niagara trailed 40-28 at the half but outscored the Monarchs 50-35 in the second half to record the victory.
Leading the way for Niagara were: Hurley, 17 points; Keltos, 14 points; Oladipo, 12 points; and, Bourdon, 10 points and six offensive rebounds.
Niagara will be back in action on March 5 and 6.
