Blackhawks pick up a point in Ancaster
The Thorold Blackhawks dropped a close 2-1 decision in double overtime to the Ancaster Avalanche in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action Saturday at the Morgan Firestone Arena.
Danial Rocco gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead with a goal late in the first period.
Kyle Kennery tied things up for Ancaster early in the second period.
That was all the scoring until Caelan McPhee scored with 33 seconds remaining to give the Avs the win. Hawks goaltender Anthony Tremonte stopped a penalty shot awarded to Dirk Stadig about a minute before the winner.
The Hawks were outshot 41-35.
Thorold, 8-10-1-1, welcomes the Avalanche Thursday at 7:07 p.m.
Corvairs 4 Meteors 3 OT
The Caledonia Corvairs needed an overtime goal from Adam Craievich to edge the Fort Erie Meteors Saturday at the Leisureplex.
Griffin Roubos, Owen Lane and Matt Weston also scored for the Corvairs, who improved to a league-leading 15-2-0-1.
Brady Lee, Drew Passero and Marco Lariccia replied for the Meteors.
Fort Erie goaltender Jacob Hearne made 45 saves in the loss.
Panthers 4 Meteors 4 2OT
Two late goals from Mike Masotti salvaged a point for the Meteors at Pelham Sunday afternoon.
Masotti’s two goals in the final 1:04 capped Fort Erie’s rally from a 4-1 deficit.
Alex McAteer and Lariccia also scored for the Meteors.
Adam Scholz, Francesco Gigliotti, Jared Hill and Noah Caperchione replied for the Panthers.
Junior Canadians 4 Avalanche 3
The Welland Junior Canadians jumped out to a 4-0 lead en route to an upset victory over the visiting Avalanche Sunday at the Welland Arena.
Alexander Dameski, Matt Hobbs, Maliek Powell and Liam Anderson scored for the the Junior Canadians, who were coming off a 12-2 drubbing Friday in St. Catharines.
Luke Croucher, Stadig and Matthew Bridgwater replied for the Avs who scored all three of their goals in the third.
