Brock women 4-0 in 2024
The Brock women’s basketball team remained perfect in 2024 with a pair of wins over the weekend.
On Friday, the Badgers pounded Algoma 77-37. Saturday, Brock came from behind on the road to record a 63-58 victory over Guelph.
Leading the way for the Badgers against Algoma (2-10) were: Madalyn Weinert with 19 points and eight rebounds; Sir Winston Churchill alumna Brookelyn Keltos with 14 points in 17 minutes of playing time; Angeline Campbell with nine points; Shailah Adams with eight points; Madison Macinnis with seven points and 14 rebounds, including nine offensive boards; and, Noor Bazzi with seven points.
Top scorer for Algoma was Kaila Fong with 11 points.
“Everybody played and we played really well,” Brock head coach Mike Rao said of the win over Algoma. “Many players shot the ball really well and it was good overall performance by everyone.”
Keltos’s points were the first ones of her university career.
“She shot the ball really well,” he said.
Top performers for Brock in the win over Guelph (9-5) were: Weinert with 30 points and nine rebounds; Campbell with 12 points and five rebounds; Bazzi with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals; and, Tito Akinnusi with eight points.
For Guelph: Renee Armstrong had 15 points; Centennial grad Alexis Wright had 14 points; Myer product Julia Colavecchia had nine points; and, Greater Fort Erie alumna Hannah Bourdon had three points and nine rebounds.
“We played well enough to win,” Rao said. “We were lucky Madalyn Weinert had a tremendous game on Saturday for us. She really carried us on her shoulders and we didn’t have a lot of help from a lot of other players.”
Not a single bench player recorded a point in the game.
The Badgers (9-4) will put their four-game winning streak on the line Friday at York (2-11) followed by a 6 p.m. Saturday home game versus Ontario Tech (1-12).
“We are going to try and get our defence a little better,” Rao said. “We have to really defend against York because they have some bigs and OUIT (Ontario Tech) shoots the ball really well. They are much better than their record indicates.”
More reinforcements may be coming Brock’s way soon as freshman Vienna Vercesi nears her return from a knee injury.
“She may be ready this weekend but for sure for Lakehead (Jan. 26 and 27 in Thunder Bay),” Rao said.
