Canucks power past Falcons
The Niagara Falls Canucks once again showed they have a deadly power play.
The Canucks scored four goals with the man advantage to defeat the St. Catharines Falcons 6-4 in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game Sunday afternoon in Niagara Falls.
The victory competed a weekend sweep for the Canucks of the home-and-home series. Niagara Falls triumphed 3-2 in St. Catharines Friday scoring three power-play goals.
“Niagara Falls was the better team,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said. “They were more disciplined and took advantage of their scoring chances. It’s imperative that we show strong emotional intelligence and not get too high or too low during the course of the game.
“We didn’t do a good job of keeping our emotions in check and as a result ended up on the losing end. This weekend was a learning opportunity for us and the lesson is pretty black and white: Stay out of the box.”
The game was tied 2-2 after one period and 3-3 after two before the Canucks pumped in three more in the third.
Danial Singer led the way for Niagara Falls with three goals while Carson Edwardson, Andrew Bruno and Sam Bourdages added singles. Former Falcon Andrew Somerville collected three assists.
Adam Cherepacha had two goals for the Falcons while Curtis Egert and former Canuck Max Lightfoot also scored.
Anthony Tremonte made 36 saves for the win.
Blair Coffin faced 31 shots in goal for St. Catharines.
The Falcons are back in action Monday in Hamilton before facing Thorold at home Friday.
“We must move forward and get back to what makes us successful. We must focus on our game and stay the course because tomorrow is a new day and a new opportunity to get better,” Bielby said.
