Colcuc commits to Guelph
Jonathan Colcuc feels the University of Guelph is a perfect fit, on and off the field.
The 18-year-old, Grade 12B student at A.N. Myer officially committed to Guelph Wednesday, where he will study agriculture while continuing his football career.
“It’s been in the writing for a long time,” Colcuc said of joining the Gyphons. “I have a lot of family history there. I have a father and uncle, lots of family there.
“From a football standpoint, great stuff. I believe in this stuff. I see it has potential to be a winning group. It’s something I want to be a part of.”
Colcuc signed on the dotted line in front of a large group of family, friends and teammates.
“It means a lot,” he said. “I’ve been around these people all four years of my career. It’s just great to see everyone give back to me. I appreciate the coaches coming from Guelph.
“It’s a big deal for me.”
Colcuc, a 6-foot-4 receiver who can also place kick and punt, is eager to see how his skill level plays in university.
“Obviously it’s going to be a big challenge, so I understand that,” he said. “But with the work I’m doing at Brock there’s a lot of help there with preparing me for the next level, the next job, getting me ready to compete and one day one step in.”
Guelph associate head coach and special teams co-ordinator Donnavan Carter has high praise for Colcuc.
“He comes from such a great family, and with his hard work and dedication, you can tell the passion for the game,” Carter said. “But on top of that is some of those intangibles. Is he going to come to our program and utilize all our facilities and tools to become a better football player? We say yes to that. We think he checks that box off so we’re looking forward to what he can do in the future.”
Carter said Colcuc will be given every opportunity to contribute.
“I think a lot of that is going to depend on how he comes in at training camp,” Carter said. “Certainly, receiver was an area that we felt like we needed to add some talent. We felt like we did that with the recruiting class, Johnny included. So we have some very good young guys coming in to compete with our undergrads there and the rest of our guys. There is opportunity. He’s gonna have to do all the right things and really pick up the system but there is opportunity sure.”
Myer coach Dave Buchanan feels Colcuc is the total package.
“Right from Day 1, I think he tried to take on leadership roles,” Buchanan said. “There’s a number of different things behind the scenes in the football program that he did, helping out with projects or volunteer, all those kinds of things, which talks about his character.
“As far as his talent level, I don’t think we’ve seen where he can go yet because he has so much potential. He had some injuries here which really kind of held him back. But even so he was a good player here. There’s no doubt, that’s why he’s being recruited. We’re excited to see how he’s going to perform at a higher level because I think he does have that potential and they know that.”
Buchanan loves Colcuc’s athleticism.
“He’s a 6-foot-4 receiver who has really good hands and he has an awareness of the game, he understands the game and he also kicks. I told him — he doesn’t like me to say this — but he’s a gifted kicker. He is a high level potential kicker. He can do both.
“He’s a great overall athlete that can do everything well. When he’s in a gym class, he does everything well. So you never know. You might see him get into that role as a backup guy for a university team. And if someone goes down, he’s the guy.”
Colcuc finished up at Myer after the first semester and is now concentrating on getting ready for camp.
“The monkey’s off the back so I can settle down. I can plan out my next eight months off and I can look forward to August,” he said.
