Collegiate athletic award winners

St. Catharines senior athletes of the year left to right: Joseph Waterman, Micailah Jones and Nathan Taylor.

Micailah Jones was named St. Catharines Collegiate’s senior girls athlete of the year at the St. Catharines high school’s athletic awards banquet.

Sharing the senior boys athlete of the year award were Nathan Taylor and Joseph Waterman.

Collegiate junior athletes of the year Kanaan Patrong and William Mitchell.

William Mitchell was named the junior boys athlete of the year and Kanaan Patrong was the junior girls athlete of the year.

Saints Recognition Awards were presented to Joseph Waterman, Jahmar Kennedy-Clarke, Justin Crawford, Selena Jones, Mackenzie Mann, Jazzmyn Babineau-Fraser, Mohanad Yafeai, Ali Rajguru and Ibrahim Al Hatimi.

Junior girls basketball: Jordyn Abram, hardest worker; Kanaan Patrong, player of the year.

Senior girls basketball: Micailah Jones, MVP: Marianne Vongboudty, most improved; Chenoor Irandost, leadership award.

Boys volleyball: Nathan Taylor, MVP; Mac Levesque, most improved

Girls volleyball: Mayke de Vries, MVP; Myranda Amendola, most improved.

Junior boys basketball: Louizidor Fenelon, MVP; Ethan Ryan, coaches award.

Senior boys basketball: Ethan Taylor, coaches award, Jerrell Plummadore, heart award; Tykree Llewellyn and Clayton Thomas-Harris, MVPs.

Girls soccer: Alexis Sinnett and Micailah Jones, MVPs; Claudia Rempel, coaches award; Arisa Chrone, most improved.

Boys soccer: Lazar Zec, rookie award; William Mitchell, MVP Julio Hernandez-Santiago, Joseph Waterman and Isiah Dewitt, coaches awards.

Bernie Puchalski, a graduate of Brock University and Niagara College, worked in journalism in Niagara for more than 27 years before taking a voluntary buyout from The Standard at the end of 2016. He started his career as a news reporter for the Niagara Falls Review before switching to sports reporting. He was a sports reporter and sports editor at the Niagara Falls Review before joining the Standard's sports department in 1996. He was named the Standard's sports editor in 2000 and became the regional sports editor, in charge of the Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Standard, in 2015, a position he held until he left the company. During his time in newspapers, he was a multiple winner and finalist for numerous Ontario and Western Ontario Newspaper Awards for sports reporting, spot news reporting and humour writing. He was a member of the Standard Boys Basketball Tournament committee and co-chair of the Standard Girls Basketball Tournament, helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for bursaries presented to participants in the tournament. He also served on countless local sports committees both in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.
