Cowan ready to rumble
Jeremy Cowan wasn’t thinking about competing when he first started throwing punches.
“I started hitting the bag just to lose some weight and then I eventually came here and I fell in love with it,” the St. Catharines Boxing Club member said Monday night.
When he first started punching a heavy bag at home he weighed 211 pounds and now the 15-year-old Beamsville resident tips the scales at a lean and mean 188 pounds.
The Grade 10 student at Blessed Trinity has been training at the boxing club for about four months and this Friday he will making his boxing debut at the club’s Sixth Annual Murphy’s Gloves Fight for the Kids Christmas Show at the Merritton Community Centre.
Coach John Robertson has been impressed with Cowan’s rapid improvement in the sport.
“He has improved really quickly and he is quite good,” he said. “He is big and strong and a good listener. And he is young and you know he is going to continue to improve.”
It took Cowan about three or four weeks of training at the club before he felt in sync with the sport.
“It is so different from other sports and you can’t expect anything,” he said.
Cowan is looking forward to his first taste of boxing on an actual fight card.
“Right now I am excited but I will be nervous on the day which everyone is.”
He is confident he is ready for his first fight.
“I am really dedicated to this and I wanted to start competing as soon as possible. My coaches saw that in me and they realized they wanted to get me in the ring as soon as possible.”
He can’t wait to experience that.
“I have never done anything like this before.”
Cowan feels he has made big improvements in every facet of boxing since joining the club.
“They have fixed everything.”
He has high hopes for his future in boxing.
“I want to go far with boxing and I want to make it my career.”
Doors for the soldout show open at 6:30 p.m. and boxing starts at 7:30 p.m. All spectators need to show proof of double vaccination for the first amateur fight card in Niagara since March 2020.
Among the other local fighters are Dylan Maisonneuve, Lucas Owens, Charlie Ryan, Riley Willis, Chris Hughes and Phoenix Young.
