Curling bonspiel a success
More than two dozen of the top local high school curlers gathered for the first Niagara Region High School Curling Showcase Bonspiel at the St. Catharines Curling Centre Wednesday.
“The event was a huge success for the curlers, parents, coaches and Niagara College,” event co-organizer Rino Berardi said. “This high school bonspiel put the spotlight on 32 of the best local curlers in the Niagara and as a result, the level of play and competition was outstanding.”
The curlers were divided into teams of four and competed in a round-robin format, with a unique “draw to the house” scoring system to declare a boys and girls champion.
On the girls’ side of the draw, only three points separated the top three teams (Niagara, NC, Knights) after three draws, however, it was Team Knights that drew their final shots into the house to capture the girls title.
Team Knights was comprised of: Taylor Smith (skip), West Niagara; Jessie MacQuarrie (vice), Sir Winston; Jordyn Quait (second), A.N. Myer; Mariia Borysova (lead), Westlane.
On the boys’ side of the draw, Team Niagara needed a third draw win to edge out Team NC in the final points standings.
Team Niagara was comprised of: Remy Pietrangelo (skip), A.N. Myer; Owen McNulty (vice) West Niagara; Gavin Gaston (second), Eden; Henry Petrychanko (lead), Governor Simcoe.
Event co-organizer and Niagara College curling coach Richard Reist was thrilled with the outcome of the event.
“We truly want to be part of the initiatives to grow the game locally by providing local curlers more opportunities to play competitively and increase the profile of our Niagara College Knights curling program,” Reist said. “As thrilled as we were with the event, our plans are to make this annual event even bigger and better next year.
