PHOENIX OPEN GYM BOXING DAY
The St. Francis Phoenix senior boys basketball team is having an open gym on Boxing Day at 3 p.m. for all its basketball alumnus.
Afterwards, the plan is to go to Bugsy’s and share some stories.
TIGERS BASKETBALL TRYOUTS
The Niagara Tigers travel basketball program is holding tryouts for its Grades 5 through 8 teams at Ridley College on Jan. 5 and 6.
Tryouts for Grades 5 and 6 will run from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and for Grades 7 and 8, the tryouts will go from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
THOROLD BADMINTON CLUB
The Thorold Badminton Club is looking for players for the second half of the 2018-19 season.
The club plays every Monday and Friday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Richmond Street School in Thorold.

TIGERS PEEWEES UNBEATEN IN 12
The Welland Telus Tigers major peewee A hockey team ran its unbeaten streak to 12 games after a 6-1 win over Pelham and a 2-2 tie with the Stoney Creek Warriors in Niagara District Peewee Doherty action.
Nicolas DiPietro led the way with a hat trick against Pelham and was joined on the scoresheet with goals by affiliated player Mason Saxton, Tyler Rowland and Mitchell Tomaino. Ian McQueen accounted for the lone Panthers tally.
Eli Moormann and DiPietro scored for the Tigers in the tie while Matthew Millar and Macauley Wellstead replied for Stoney Creek.
Welland’s record is now 11-2-5.
NINE AND COUNTING FOR ATOMS
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers major atom A hockey team extended its undefeated streak in Niagara District Atom Doherty division play to nine games with a 4-1 win over the Port Colborne Sailors.
Colby Franchetti scored twice and Carson McComber and Tanner Cutler once each as Welland snapped Port’s three-game win streak and claimed sole possession of first place in the league standings. Welland is now 13-2-3.
MINOR ATOMS BREAK EVEN
The Welland Youngs Insurance Tigers minor atom hockey team was .500 in recent action, losing 2-1 to Garden City, defeating Stoney Creek 4-1 and losing 2-1 to Stoney Creek and swamping the Dunnville Mudcats 5-1.
Jaxson Beck score the lone goal against Garden City, assisted by Blake Marton.
In the 4-1 win over Stoney Creek, Blake Marton, Cade Bovine, Joseph Boychuk and Mackenzie Taylor scored and Matteo Valleriani, Beck, Cole McCarthy, Marton and Boychuk contributed assists. Marton added the lone goal in the loss to Stoney Creek.
Scoring versus Dunnville were Austin Bovine, Valleriani, McCarthy, Boychuk and Ethan Fortier. Marton, Kalen Sumbler, McCarthy and Fortier pitched in with an assist each.
Owen Fewkes played another fantastic game in goal with help from the Tigers defence.
PEEWEES TRIPLE FALLS
Zach Jansen led the way with a hat trick to power the Welland 91.7 Giant FM Country 89 Tigers minor peewee A hockey team to a 6-2 tripling of the Niagara Falls AE Flyers.
Tyler Ray, Jordan Raso, Blake Turner also scored. The Tigers’ defence was solid as was goalie Gavin Beck.
NOVICES THUMP PELHAM
Mackenzie Welychka potted a hat trick to lead the Welland Mike Knapp Ford Tigers novice A hockey team to a 10-1 win over Pelham.
Noah Rousseau and Jordan Hotham each netted two goals and singles were contributed by Blake Hudak, Ryan Rousseau and Ethan Rousseau.
In net for the win was Jackson MacLeod
Welland then improved to 14-0-1 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors.
Liam Seguin scored twice for the Tigers and singles were potted by Dylan Wood, Noah Rousseau, Hudak and Ryan Rousseau.
Brady Matte picked up the win in goal.
