Sir Winston Churchill basketball players Kaley DeMont and Ally Sentance recently played in the Elite 24 Ontario High School All Star Game at Humber College.
Sentance played on Team White and DeMont suited up Team Blue.
The game featured 24 of the top high school players in Ontario.
TENNIS TOURNEY
The Second Annual Men’s Doubles Elite/Invitational 5.0-5.5 (18+) tennis tournament will be played Saturday, Jan. 5 at White Oaks from 2 to 5 p.m.
Fans are invited to come watch the best men’s tennis players from within the Niagara Region, including former NCAA Division 1 players and the Niagara Tennis League’s Line No. 1 Open level participants, and players and teaching pros from Hamilton and the GTA.
REDS WIN BIG
A huge third quarter helped propel the Denis Morris Reds to a 76-51 win over the Saint Michael’s Mustangs in Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior boys basketball action.
The Reds went on a 23-6 run in the third frame to pull away from the Mustangs after leading 34-25 at the half-time break.
“It really was our most complete game of the season to this point,” said Reds coach Randy Conlon. “We had a really good week of practices leading up to the game and it carried over.”
The Reds led 18-14 after the first and 57-31 after three quarters.
Noah Honsberger led the way for the Reds with 26, while Zubeer Liban tossed in 17 and Michael Conlon added 16.
Steven Cabrara led all scorers for St. Michael’s with 28 while Hayden Spelier had eight.
TEN AND COUNTING
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers atom A hockey team, winners of eight straight league games and undefeated in ten in Niagara District Atom Doherty action, steamrolled past the Stoney Creek Warriors 6-3.
The win was sparked by tremendous defence, a hat trick from Mason Risto and single tallies from Brennen Hagar, Colby Franchetti and Tanner Cutler. All three lines contributed to the balanced attack.
Welland (14-2-3 in divisional play) is tied for first with Niagara-on-the-Lake.
PAIR OF SHUTOUTS
The Welland Telus Tigers major peewee A hockey team was unscored upon in recent action, blanking Thorold 5-0 and tying Glanbrook 0-0 in Niagara District Peewee Doherty action this week.
Brandon Alexander recorded his seventh shutout of 2018 and Christian Manazzone his third in net for Glanbrook as the top two teams in terms of goals allowed staged a goaltending and defensive standoff with neither team giving an inch. With the tie, Welland remains undefeated in fourteen games and sits tied with Garden City atop the standings with eight regular season games remaining.
Against Thorold, Bryson Farr notched his fifth shutout of the season supported by goals from Nicolas DiPietro, Mitchell Tomaino, Eli Moormann, Carter Kipp and Tyler Rowland.
TIGERS SPLIT
The Welland 91.7 Giant FM Country 89 Tigers minor peewee A hockey team split a pair of recent games beating the Niagara Falls AE Flyers 6-1 and losing 6-4 to the Garden City Falcons.
Ryan Reeves, Jaxon Vanderlip, Max Myers, Josh Lamb, Blake Turner and Zach Jansen scored against Niagara Falls.
Against Garden City, scoring for the Tigers were Tyler Ray, Alexander McQuillan, Lamb, and Noah Bovine.
NOVICE TIGERS UNBEATEN
The Welland Mike Knapp Ford Tigers novice A hockey team was unbeaten in recent play beating Grimsby 7-1 and tying Dunnville and Lincoln 1-1.
Against Grimsby, Mackenzie Welychka and Liam Seguin scored twice and singles were netted by Jordan Hotham, Ethan Rousseau and Noah Rousseau. In net for the win was Brady Matte.
Welychka scored against Dunnville and Seguin scored versus Lincoln.
