Betty Divok celebrated her husband Derek Divok’s birthday in style Saturday.
The 62-year-old St. Catharines resident fired an 80 to capture the senior women’s championship at the 74th Walt McCollum Niagara District Champions of Champions golf tournament at St. Catharines Golf and Country Club, then took her hubby out for a night on the town.
“I bought tickets in the summer to see Kenny Wayne Sheppard and we stayed over and made it a night out,” Betty Divok said. “It was a good celebration.”
Divok edged out Barb Brown of Port Colborne by two strokes. Sarah-Anne Smurlick of Freedom Oaks (85), Jeanne Glavac of Lookout (87), Sue Labatte of Niagara Falls Golf Club (88) and Debbie Waitkus of Fort Erie Golf Club (88) rounded out the top five.
The title was her third senior women’s championship and sixth overall, including three women’s titles.
Divok was golfing in a group which included Brown, who won last year.
“I knew exactly where we stood because I thought she was the one to be watching,” Betty Divok said. “She won last year and is a wonderful player, a very steady player, and I got paired up with her in my group so I knew I had to beat my group to have a chance to win.
“She was the one I was watching the most.”
Betty Divok gave credit to her putter for the victory.
“Normally putting isn’t my strength but I didn’t three-putt. I made lots of good, long two-putts, just getting around the hole because the greens were tricky,” she said. “They were quicker than what I normally play and they had the pins in some nice edges and spots that were on the curve. It helped me keep my scores down.”
Betty Divok takes the Champion of Champions very seriously.
“I’m represent Rockway so I want to do I can for our course,” she said. “I feel it’s a representation of our club and the other members too. We are all there to represent Rockway so we certainly want to do our best.
“People are watching your score and you don’t want to be embarrassed. It doesn’t always work. I ended up third last year. You try. You don’t always bring your game every time but I happened to have a good day.”
