Eight national medals for Thorold Elite
Athletes from the Thorold Elite Track Club brought home eight medals from the 45th Annual Legion Youth Nationals Track and Field Championships held at University of Sherbrooke from Aug. 11-13.
Highlighting the Thorold Elite performance was a gold medal by Ayla Laing in the under-16 1500-metre racewalk. Laing, a member of Team Ontario, completed the race with a personal best time of 7:27.11.
“Even to qualify for a national championship at this age is a big accomplishment. It was great to see our athletes shine on the national stage and to have our parents and athletes come together to cheer on and support their teammates in Quebec,” Thorold Elite coach Steven Fife said. “We are really proud of all of the achievements this season and are now looking forward to some rest and recovery. Our cross country season starts up already next week and the other events will resume training in September.”
Thorold Elite athletes earning silver medals against athletes from across Canada were: Chase Owen in the under-16 boys pole vault; and, Coco Van Nynatten in the under-18 girls discus.
Mining bronze medals were: Charlotte Berner in the under-18 girls pole vault; Braeden Brouwer in the under-18 Boys 110-metre hurdles; Sadiekie Hayden in the under-16 boys triple jump; Kaleb Kennedy in the under-18 boys javelin; and, Owen Robins in the under-18 boys hammer throw.
Luca Radtke-Haris from Athletics Niagara won a bronze medal in the under-18 boys decathlon.
Thirty-one athletes from across Niagara took part in the competition.
