Enns’ new beginning in the Soo
It was a great moment for Trent Enns Saturday when the 16-year-old St. Catharines native was selected in the 12th round, 230th overall by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
“It was something that I have wanted ever since I was a little kid. It was kind of an indescribable feeling.”
Once the initial shock wore off, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound left defenceman with the Niagara North Stars U16 AAA squad started thinking about how nice it was going to be to head to the Soo with North Stars goalie Nick Solomin, who was drafted in the sixth round, 110th overall by the Greyhounds.
“That was kind of cool that I will get to see him up there,” the Grade 10 student at Eden said. “It’s nice because I will be a little nervous going in with all these kids that are obviously very skilled to get drafted. I am excited to have someone I know there.”
Enns received a phone call from the Greyhounds once his selection was announced.
“They said that they were excited to draft me and they will see me on a weekend in May.”
He is looking forward to his first chance to become part of the Greyhounds’ organization.
“It will be the moment being around all the other kids and coaches in Soo and going up there for the weekend. It’s going to be a cool experience.”
He is going to do as much as he can to be ready for his first taste of the OHL experience.
“I am going to work out and get my body in the best shape possible to show off my skills as much as possible.
Enns, who had a goal and two assists in 34 regular season game and scored the winning goal in triple overtime to advance to North Stars to the OHL Cup, has a goal of making the Sault Ste. Marie roster in a year or two.
“That would be great and playing in an OHL game would be part of the main goal.”
He is thankful for everyone who helped his achieve his hockey goal.
“I want to thank my mom and dad (Gary and Gwenda), my brother (Travis), Athletes Farm, the gym I go to, and all the trainers there. They have definitely helped me get into the best shape possible for this year.”
There were no big plans for a celebration Friday.
“I am probably going to hang out with my family and let the moment sink in.”
