Erskine sees stars
Brett Erskine put together another memorable season with the University of Detroit Mercy Titans.
The 23-year-old St. Catharines native collected 17 goals and 25 points in just seven games and was named a MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) first team all-star.
“It was a good honour to have. Our team is leaving the MAAC this year so it was nice to hang my hat on that,” Erskine said.
Erskine, who has 110 points and 47 goals in 41 career games, was proud of his output.
“It was very similar to all my years,” the former St. Catharines Athletic said. “I had a couple of good games where I was fortunate enough that my teammates got me the ball and I was in the right place at the right time to put up some goals and assists throughout the year.
“I’m not sure how many goals or assists I had but I really don’t care too much about that stuff. I didn’t play good enough for us to win in the quarter-finals and that’s all I cared about.”
The Titans were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the MAAC playoffs with a loss to St. Bonaventure after being idle for three weeks. The Titans only played seven games this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic which wreaked havoc on their schedule.
“There was some difficulty getting games in with COVID but luckily our team was pretty safe,” he said. “We had no cases throughout the season which was really good but other teams had some problems.”
Erskine, who is about to graduate with a degree in business administration with concentrations on finance and decision sciences and a minor in leadership, plans to go back for a fifth year and complete his Master of Business Administration and play one more season of field lacrosse.
He began preparing for college in Grade 11 when he transferred from St.Francis to the Western Reserve Academy in Ohio.
“Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said. “I learned a lot of valuable lessons. I grew up more in boarding school and then more in university. I learned a lot of the things you don’t really learn until you are on your own. I was fortunate enough to learn those things at a younger age so I was pretty well prepared for university and life after university, whenever that may come.
“I made some really good friends, people I will be connected to for the rest of my life.”
Erskine has returned home for the summer and isn’t quite sure what the immediate future holds in store.
“I’m going to wait and see what’s going to happen,” he said. “It’s pretty tough coming back after a season. I’d like to have a couple of weeks of down time. I’m going to see what the best options are.”
Erskine could play in the Major Series, but that season is still up in the air due to the pandemic.
“Taking a summer off and just training and getting better might be in the cards. I will have to see what the rules are and if it does open up, if it’s even worth trying to play a condensed season or a season with restrictions. It might just be better to try and get a little stronger and bigger in the summer and go from there.”
