Falcons clip Blackhawks
The St. Catharines Falcons fired home three goals in the second period to break open a close game and defeat the Thorold Blackhawks 4-2 in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game Friday at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
Griffen Fox opened the scoring netting a power-play goal for the Hawks in the first period.
The Falcons then went to work in the second as Zach Lawrence and Dakota Miskolczi, with a pair, gave St. Catharines a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. All three goals were scored with the man advantage.
Tyler MacArthur made it 4-1 early in the second before Trevor Neumann rounded out the scoring with a late goal.
“We did a lot of good things,” Falcons coach/general manager Frank Girhiny said. “We had a very good third period. It was nice to see Falcon hockey played tonight by the entire team.”
The Falcons, 35-7-1-3, lead the Ancaster Avalanche by four points for second place.
St. Catharines visit Welland Sunday at 7 p.m. and are in Buffalo Tuesday. They host Ancaster next Friday in their final regular season home game.
Corvairs 8 Canucks 1
The Caledonia Corvairs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period en route to an easy win over the Niagara Falls Canucks at the Gale Centre.
Owen Lane and Sean O’Brien had two goals each for the winners while Jesse Barwell, Bobby Harrison, Adam Craievich and Andrew Burns added singles.
Matthew Riva replied for the Canucks.
