The St. Catharines Rankin Construction Falcons ran their winning streak to five and clinched a playoff spot in the process with a pair of convincing wins this week.
The Falcons topped the Welland Junior Canadians 9-2 Friday at home after defeating the Brantford Titans 7-2 in Brantford Thursday in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
The Falcons are now 29-8-0-1 and lead the Eastern Conference with 59 points, six up on the Ayr Centennials, who own three games in hand.
“Great starts both games,” Falcons assistant coach Rick Girhiny said. “Got off to an early lead both games. Sixteen goals scored in two games, it’s great to see us come out offensively lately receiving contributions from all areas of the lineup. Great to have our captain (Cam Lowe) back and getting into form, can really see the team rallying around him. Looking forward to having (Matt) Fries return next weekend as well.”
Newcomer Sam Mudie had three goals and an assist for the Falcons while Nathan Duplessis, Treyson Dewar, Trent Vaillancourt, Calvin Petrovsky, Mitch Dmytrow and Lowe added singles.
Jacob Ceranic made 17 saves for the win.
Joey Marrese and Denimas Mosler-Plata replied for Welland.
“It was a great game all around, really happy with the way we moved the puck,” Falcons assistant Mason Howard said. “Up three in the first three minutes. Had a hot start and got everyone in the game early.
“Didn’t love some of our penalties. Thought we could be a bit more disciplined and it allowed Welland to score some power-play goals.”
Lowe had two goals versus Brantford while Dillon Atkinson, Petrovsky, Duplessis, Ally Mostafaie and Marcus Harris also scored.
Hayden Jeffery made 30 saves for the win.
“Started the game organized and energized and were prepared for what we were going to be up against,” Girhiny said. “Overall really happy with the weekend. Now it’s time to ready to prepare for a big weekend next week.”
The Falcons are home to Caledonia Friday and in Port Colborne next Sunday.
