Falcons jump on Corvairs early
The St. Catharines Falcons scored early and often en route to a 4-1 victory over the Caledonia Corvairs in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game in Caledonia Monday.
Mitchell Armstrong got the Falcons on the board three minutes into the game before Sam Williamson made it 2-0 at the 12:13 mark.
Kyle Glenney and Chris Reid, with his team-leading third of the season, added to the Falcons’ lead in the second period.
“It was nice to get a road win on a Monday night in Caledonia,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said. “It’s early in the season so naturally there is a lot of room for improvement. However, I thought we got out to a great start with a couple early goals. Always nice to see that when we have been struggling to score early in the season.”
Zach DiCesare broke Andrew MacLean’s bid for a shutout when he scored on a penalty shot with 41 seconds remaining in the third period.
MacLean made 34 saves for the win while Hayden Dunford faced 43 shots in goal for the Corvairs.
Bielby feels the win is a good stepping stone with still plenty of room for improvement.
“While we continue to sort out our structure and chemistry, it’s important to bring our best effort and work through the in-game adversity,” he said. “Everyone in our room has to be the hardest working guy on the ice, and it’s imperative that they match that with dedication towards being a student of the game.
“We have a lot of guys playing in their first junior season, and if they want to be successful, it’s important to be a sponge at soak it all in. The team that learns and executes early in the season will definitely have an advantage. We are committed to being that team.”
The Falcons, 4-1-0-1, are home to the Welland Junior Canadians, 1-2, Friday at 7 p.m.
Kilty B’s 4 Canucks 2
The Hamilton Kilty B’s remain the lone undefeated team at 4-0 following a 4-2 win over the visiting Niagara Falls Canucks.
Nolan Underwood, Colin McDougall, Matthew Duarte and Dylan Abbamont scored for the Kilty B’s.
Gage Stewart turned back 30 shots for the win.
Jake Hale and Ethan Walker replied for the Canucks, who fell to 3-2.
