Falcons pull out win in Buffalo
The St. Catharines Falcons needed a late goal by Lucas Smilsky to come away with two points Tuesday night in Buffalo.
Smilsky scored with just 36 seconds remaining to lift the Falcons to a 5-4 double overtime win over the Buffalo Regals in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action.
“It was a game that we should have put away long before the third period, but when you let teams hang around anything can happen,” St. Catharines coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “At the end of the day, we left with two points and a handful of lessons to be learned—both are important moving forward.”
The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one on goals by Dante Copps, Dakota Miskolczi and Jaleel Adams.
Joseph Marszalek got the Regals on the board seven minutes into the second before Tanner Ferreira scored to restore the Falcons three-goal lead.
Buffalo then rallied in the third with three straight goals by Brendan Quinlin, Cameron Clark and Ryan Kelly to send the game into overtime.
Former Pelham goaltender Dillon Lamarche made his debut for St. Catharines and made 35 saves.
The Falcons, 21-5-0-2, are home to Ancaster Friday. The Falcons will hold a food drive. All donations are for @communitycarest.
