Falcons put away Corvairs
Calvin Petrovsky stepped up when the St. Catharines Falcons needed him the most.
With captain Caleb Thompson sidelined due to illness, the 18-year-old forward make the most of the extra ice time, scoring twice and adding an assist as the Falcons topped the Caledonia Corvairs 5-3 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Sports Complex.
“Special nod to Petro who stepped up and scored two big goals for us tonight,” Falcons general manager/coach Tyler Bielby said. “Petro was able to step in and help us on the offensive side of the puck.”
The win improves the Falcons record to 14-5-0-1 and moves them to within one point of the Fort Erie Meteors for second place. The Corvairs lead the standings with 17 wins in 21 games and 35 points.
Each team scored twice in the first period before the Falcons netted two quick goals early in the second to take a 4-2 lead. The Corvairs got one back later in the period. St. Catharines then iced the game away with a late goal in the third by Brenden Anderson.
“Extremely proud of our group tonight,” Bielby said. “We felt we put together a solid 60 minutes and executed a strong game plan. All the credit goes to those boys on the ice tonight. They battled, played determined and were rewarded for it.”
St. Catharines defenceman Trent Vaillancourt returned to the lineup for the first time in six weeks after having knee surgery.
“Also want to give props to Vally,” Bielby said. “For a 16-year-old to step in and play a game like he did, is just more proof that he has a bright future.”
The Falcons are in Port Colborne Saturday. The Sailors are coming off a 9-0 win over Welland Friday.
Dylan Pergentile and Liam Wicks had two each while Sam Tonelli, Zach Scholar, Nathan Kelly, Aiden Cupelli and Jordan Harrison also scored.
Isaac Gravelle made 40 saves for the shutout.
“We enjoy the W tonight and get re-focussed for Port. It’s important we show up and put together another solid 60,” Bielby said.
