Flag football semifinals set
The Holy Cross Raiders varsity girls flag football team completed a perfect Niagara Catholic Athletic Association regular season with a 36-16 victory over the Blessed Trinity Thunder last week.
“Quarterback Grace Vani was able to find Charlotte Marotta several times in the end zone resulting in three touchdowns,” Holy Cross head coach Erin Gauthier wrote. “In the second half, Leah Briscall added another score. Mia Mc Adam and Leila Ulin used their speed to run the ball giving us good field position throughout the game. Gracie Cherney and Charlotte Hingston contributed on the defensive end.”
In other games last week: Denis Morris lost 27-26 to Saint Michael; Saint Paul blanked Lakeshore Catholic 33-0; and, Saint Francis knocked off Saint Michael Team Two 46-19.
“The Lady Reds finished off their flag football season in a nail-biter against St. Michael high school. After several of the players donned cheerleading uniforms to cheer our tackle players to victory against BT, and Reese Praskey took the field for our own Reds varsity squad, the girls changed and raced to Niagara Falls to suit up for their final game of the season,” Denis Morris head coach Erin Clark said. “Rookie Ariyana Uppal was impressive on both sides of the ball while Elyse Naphin made impressive gains on offence. Haliyat Ayoola and Julia Chininea were solid on corner. Veterans Reese Praskey, Chloe Hutton and Angel Adeboye made their presence felt with interceptions, touchdowns and sacks respectively. It was great to see some of the tackle players make the journey to return the favour and cheer on our Lady Reds. While the regular season is over, the girls are back in action in tournament play Nov. 1.”
Holy Cross finished first in the league with a 7-0 record followed by Saint Paul (6-1), Saint Francis (5-2), Saint Michael Team Two (4-3), Saint Michael (3-4), Blessed Trinity (2-5), Denis Morris (1-6) and Lakeshore Catholic (0-7).
The top three offences during the regular season were Saint Francis (299 points), Saint Paul (282 points) and Saint Michael Two (222 points).
The top three defences were Holy Cross (118 points allowed), Saint Michael (156 points allowed) and Saint Francis (161 points allowed).
The semifinals and championship game will be played Tuesday at Denis Morris. In semifinal action at 2 p.m., the Holy Cross Raiders play Saint Michael Two and the Saint Paul Patriots take on the Saint Francis Phoenix.
The final is scheduled for 3 p.m.
