Friday night junior B roundup: Falcons top Regals, Canucks wipe out Meteors
The St. Catharines Falcons moved into sole possession of fourth place with a convincing 7-0 win over the visiting Buffalo Regals Friday night at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
The Falcons improved to 10-5-1 in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference standings with the win.
Adam Cherepacha paced the offence with a pair of goals while Nick Volpatti, Curtis Egert, Kyler Watson, Noah Blakely and 15-year-old rookie Tai York added singles.
“It was nice to get some secondary scoring out of the young guys,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said. “The key for them is to play the game the right way positionally. If they do that, they will continue to be rewarded.”
Ethan Cook turned back 20 shots for the shutout.
“The boys put in a solid defensive effort to help Cookie earn the shutout. He was so good for us to start the season, it was nice to see him earn the egg,” Bielby said.
St. Catharines led 2-0 after one and 6-0 after two periods.
“As much as we are happy with the win, I thought we could have been better in the third. We realize it’s easy to get comfortable with a 7-0 lead, but if we want to have success at the end of the year, we cannot take shifts off this time of year. Every shift is an opportunity to get better. When you take a shift off, that opportunity is lost,” Bielby added.
The Falcons host the Niagara Falls Canucks Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Canucks 10 Meteors 3
Anthony Issaris had two goals and three assists as the Niagara Falls Canucks defeated the visiting Fort Erie Meteors at the Gale Centre.
Matthew Riva and Thomas Lenart added two goals each while singles came off the sticks of Brodie Thoms, Brian O’Neill, Andrew Bruno and Jake McKinstray.
Paul Cartone, Anthony Gigliotti and Marco Lariccia replied for the Meteors, who dropped to 2-12-0-2.
The Canucks are in Caledonia Saturday.
The Meteors welcome the Thorold Blackhawks Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
