The Fort Erie Meteors, St. Catharines Falcons and Caledonia Corvairs of the Golden Horseshoe Conference all went 2-0 at the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase over the weekend in Elmira.
The Meteors blanked the Stratford Warriors 3-0 Friday and followed that up with a 1-0 win over the Waterloo Siskins Saturday.
“A great weekend for our league and definitely our program,” Fort Erie general manager/coach Nik Passero said. “Getting the opportunity to play against two of the most historic franchises in our entire league was a great privilege.”
John Lloyd made 24 saves for the shutout versus Stratford while Hunter Coley had two goals and Kyle Adamo one.
Niagara IceDogs prospect Charlie Burns turned back 38 shots in the win over Kitchener. R.J. Schmidt netted the lone goal of the game in the third period.
“We defended well all weekend obviously and had two really great goaltending performances. We knew coming into the season it wouldn’t be easy to score and it hasn’t been,” Passero said. “If we can continue to defend the way we have in the last two weeks, I know we will be able to find a way to put some pucks into the back of the net.”
Falcons 2 Maroons 0
Falcons 3 Vipers 1
The Falcons ran their record to a perfect 4-0 behind a pair of solid defensive efforts.
Marcus Harris scored early and Owen King netted one late in the win over Chatham.
Cal Gardner, making his Falcons debut, kicked out 39 shots for the shutout.
Noah Read, Caleb Thompson and Ben Smith scored in the win over LaSalle.
Hayden Jeffery turned in another solid performance in net for St. Catharines, making 33 saves.
“It was nice to come out of the crossover weekend with four points,” Falcons general manager/coach Tyler Bielby said. “We felt we could have been better versus Chatha so we challenged the boys to provide a better effort on the Sunday. We are impressed with the way they responded in the first period versus La Salle. That being said, it’s important we show more discipline and stay out of the box. We never want to be in a position where we beat ourselves. We have a passionate group and it’s important that we channel it properly, myself included.”
Bielby also tipped his cap to the goaltending and penalty killing units.
“Their hard work and solid play was second to none. They were a big reason we walked away with two points in both games,” he said.
Bielby felt the Showcase was well organized.
“Thank you to Elmira and the league who put on a great weekend for all those involved.”
